Willow SpringsRR By Ron MacLain ROSAMOND, CA, NOV. 2 The Graves brothers, Chuck and Michael, logged seven wins between them in the 14-race program put on by the Ameri- 26 can Road Racing Association at Willow Springs Raceway. ICRT Michelin/Christmans M.C.s/Cole Bros. Suz.lDoctor Johns Frame Straightening-sponsored Chuck Graves won the Formula One, Open Stock Production, 750cc Modified Production, 750cc SUpeTStreet and Formula Three classes; while his brother Michael was first in the 600cc Modified Production and 600cc Superstreet events. Chuck Graves roUed his Suzuki to the starting grid in Formula Onethe final event of the day - having breezed through his first four races. Squaring off against him. was F-I points leader Kenny Kopecky, who earlier had notched wins m the Open Modified Production and Open Supersueet races. Kopecky shot out of the hole for the early lead, but Graves got a good drive out of turn one and slipped into the lead exiting tum two. Graves extertded his lead dramaticaUy until the halfway point when Kopecky started to eat away at the lap time differential. Graves whipped hiS GSXR750 through the tight tlll'ds lea\ling Kopecky in hi, ,- UI; ~ Kopecky's GSXRII 00 gained through the fast sections. On lap five Graves led by ·three seconds over Kopecky. By the white flag lap Kopecky had cut Graves lead to less than two seconds. The race ended too soon for Kopecky as Graves held on for his fifth win of the day, while Bob DeWitt took third place. The competition was fierce in the 450cc SupeTSUeet class, with Birgit Soyka grabbing the win after a race Long duel that saw five different riders holding the lead at one time or another. Soyka and her ICRT Michelin/John Lassig Racing-sponsored Yamaha got away poorly at the stan, but managed to jam her way into the lead by the end of lap two, only to be zapped back to third by Jim Martin anrlTom Paris as they outbraked her into tum one to begin the third lap. Martin managed to stay in front till Yamaha-mounted Paris stuffed him in the same turn to start the fourth lap. Martin regained the lead from Paris by going underneath him imo turn three, while Soyka charged past Paris in turn four to take the second slot. On lap five David Morris wem by everyone coming down out of the tum four "Balcony" and led until Martin and Soyka powered by in tum nine_ Chuck Morton carne from nowhere and passed aU the from runnersdown the long suaight to lead on lap six. Soyka took over on lap seven and appeared to be leaving the pack, but on the last lap Yamaha-mounted Morton railed through turn nine and doled . . a wheel ~ of 'Victory, be denied tena- Capped off by one of Rodney Farris' hardest earned wins in the 250cc Pro final, four of the five defending class champs led their respective class across the finish line as the Baltimore C9unty Trail Riders and the Cockeysville Optimist Club launched their 11th Annual Indoor Short Track Series in the Cow Palace at Timonium Fairgrounds. WinneTS were Joe Bromley in the I 25cc class, Dan Reichert in the250cc division, Jim Hollister taking the 360cc final, and Farris in the 250cc Pro final. The lone class champ who didn't win was Georgie Price who has finally started to grow out of his SO, and this year moved up to battle the "big" boys in the 125cc class. With Price moving up a class and the only other rider to win the 80cc class the past two years dying in a ultra-light plane crash last year, the 80cc class was wide open for the first time in two years. Pre-race favorites had to be Kevin Varnes and Mike Sponseller. But in the final, Jill Lautenbacher was first out of the second turn, followed closely by Sponseller, Paul Southard and Varnes. Varnes moved into third in the middle of the second lap. Lautenbacher held the lead after a fourth lap restart, but the wolves were nipping at her heels. About three laps after the restart, Sponseller slipped under her coming off the second tum and then Varnes also slipped by her a few laps later, and Southard took third from her on the final lap in the same spot. With Varnes in second, he started to close the gap, but Sponseller kept the lead by about two lengths to Wtn. . The packed house was really pumped fa. the final event of the night, the 250cc Pro final. For the past four years, Rodney Farris has , dominated this dass on his GaIW NixOD Bultaco, aO!lally..only geumg b beat once or twice in that period 0 time. Other loses were equipmen related, usually while in the lead. Everyone expected to see Farris in hi usual spot - one of two lengths i from of the field as they exited th second tum, but he was third behin a very quick starting Todd Kendi and Tom Majeski. For the first half of the final, they ran nose-to-tail. About halfway through the race Kendig went slightly high corning out of two, and both Majeski and Farris went for the opening as the three were briefly three abreast on the narrow groove. Kendig was odd man out as he had his handlebar~ clipped, sending him to the concrete. By the time they got LO the third turn, Farris had taken the lead from Majeski, which he held to win by a bike length. Results . 80: 1. Mika Sponseller (Hon); 2. Kevin Vame. (Yaml; 3. Trickle who was one of the fastest 80cc raceTS in the Las Vegas valley before suffering an injury, dominated the 125 and 250cc Novice motos, grabbing four holeshots and four easy victories. Trickle used an older bike to demolish the 125cc Novices, but was racing a brand new 1987 Honda in the 250cc Novice division. Results were the same however. as everyone else was Id.t fighting over second. Behind Trickle, it was Jeff Hodge edging out Fabian Gomez for second in the 125cc Novice ranks. Steve Goodwin claimed second overall among the 250cc Novice ahead of Murphy, Mark Young and Martin Ansorge. Derek Titus rode to victory in the combined 80cc ExpertlIntermediate race, beating a suong field that included national racer David Griego. Titus gassed his Suzuki to holeshot race one, but GJjego wasted no time in flashing past' for the lead. Inter; mediate racer Mi~e Michels was close behind them 'in third. The top three racers rapidly put distance on the rest of the field, but as the race continued, the from positions tended to separate. Griego was an easy winner, ahead of Titus,. Michels and Johnny Camden. Mic~els grabbed the holeshot in moto two, but experts Titus and Griego soon whistled past to fight over first place. The two fastest 80cc riders were soon dueling all around the course. Griego finally stuffed his way past Titus in the late stages of the race. Then, on the white-flag lap, Griego almost endoed at the"doubleuouble" doubles, but managed to hang on. That little opening was all Titus would need, as he flashed past for the lead. Griego recovered and rode like a wild man, but there was not enough time left. Las Vegas Suzuki's Titus won the moto and a well-eamed overall crown. Honda of Las Vegas' Griego finished in second.
