Stayton MX Finale By Joel Church MORAVIA, Y, OCT. 19 District Three held its final motocross of the year today at Stayton's Motocross Track and Ron Drake emerged as the big winner with his perfect I-I Lally in the Open Expert class, Drake displayed his ability to power around the course and after [ollowing Paul Ashbarry through the [irst turn, he took the lead and win in the Open Expert class molO one. SCOll Pinney jumped lO second with Frank Calandra [ollowing on his Honda. Mike Hartje and Jerry Harris slipped by Ashbarry close to the molO'S end. In the second molO Hartje took control and seemed able lo hold [irst over a charging Pinney, but Drake was on the move after a poor start. When the leaders came down the "Thrill Hill" Drake was in second and increasing his lap time on the bumpy track, Wi.L.h only two laps remaining, Drake new by Hartje and took the win. Pinney and Calandra rode in behind th'e -leaders for third and fourth, respectively. Ken Hammond grabbed the holeshot with Richard Field in lOW in the 250cc Amateur class. Patrick Andersen and Ethan Goodrich came from midpack starts to challenge Hammond and Field. Lap four saw Goodrich move by Andersen and Field and then hound Hammond to the finish, Field dropped back a ways whi Ie Andersen kept a dose watch on the two front runners_ Moto two Had Andersen being chased by the fast and furious 25Qcc Amateur class. Field and Goodrich diced for second with Goodrich moving on lo scrap with Andersen. Hammond had trouble onthe [irst lap and charged up to seventh by the finish after passing Field in the process. Goodrich could not edge by _ Andersen and took second overall with Hammond capturing third overall, Junior Mini rider Jason Bowman had the lead after one lap and rode flawlessly to take the win in mOlOone over Mark Calandra and John Blake. Moto two was a pholO copy for the top three of molO one with Bowman really on the gas. Tommy Lake and Adrian Mawhir picked up fourth and fifth for the day. Results 125 AM; 1. Ethan Goodrich (Hon); 2. Coming into town late on Saturday night, he and the two boy's with him couldn't find a room so they spent the night in their van at the local K-Mart parking Jot. Darland wins ADRA Young Classic By Daryl Drake YOUNG, AZ, OCT. 5 Jeff Darland put his holeshot to good use at the Arizona Racing Association's 4th Annual Young Classic, by leading the race throughout to take first overall and Open Expert honors aboard his Sunnyslope/Dirt Unlimited Honda CR500. His time was 2:46:45 for his lOO-mile trip through the rain, rock and brush oETonto National Forest's Pleasant Valley. ."It got a little slick in spots, but overall the ground was perfect," said Darland. "I fell once, then on my third lap, I ran into some traffic on the cow trail and losl a liule time, and worried about RusSell catclling up, Bob Russell finished a little over a minute behind for second overall and Open Expert. Then followed 250cc Amateur winner Bill Johnson just two minutes later aboard his Mesa Suzuki Sports Center RM250. Points leader Mike Powers (KTM) was in a few seconds later for fourth overall and third Open, Expert, followed by Gary Tuffin (25Occ Expert winner), Bob Tod (200cc Expert winner), Pat Duncan, Randall Boylan, Tim Leehe and Jim Maxwell. Garth Sweetland, who had been tied for the points lead, got off hard and couldn't finish but suffered no major injuries. . Marvin Key edged out Bill Watkins by three minutes for the Open Amateur win, while Bryon Farnsworth ran away with the Senior Amateur win. Results 200 EX: 1. Bob Tod (KIM); 2. Kan Aach (Cag).
