Halfway down six: Gteen'sDack end swung out, almost flat-track style, after gathering that up, he pulled away up to seven, looking down as though he might have had a flat tire, but as luck would have it, it wasn't flat. but the rear axle had broken. This left his rear hub broken badly, so bad hecould do nothing but watch Michael Moore come around to take the win. • cron"1. U(.c=.r:B.J 6M ~~I~ Ra ,,".,,,25 RI.IO> 10 ·lSii'i~:l'J:(l~ (Yam); 3. The combined Open and 250cc Novice c.... gets underway during California Racing Club motocross at Glen Helen Raceway. tion, Sandell needed another high finish to buy his first title. Newell stole another holeshot in round two, while Englund gated third just ahead of Sandell. As the top four riders descended a rough left-hand sweeper late in lap one, Sandell was pushed to the outside and crashed hard. Sandell remounted ninth, and two laps later, he was in fifth, but Englund had the lead. Things continued to change up front, and on lap five, Cope was leading Brown, Englund and Sandell. From there on, Cope dominated to the finish ahead of Englund, while Sandell was eventually able to reach third. He coasted from there knowing he had the overall and the championship. Scott Kilgore had a comfortable 14point lead over J im Mitchell entering the Open Pro finale. An anticipated duel never materialized as Mitchell, on a borrowed Yamaha, had nothing but problems all day. Newell entered one of his few Open races this season and won both motos ahead of Kilgore. Tim Buchli was 53-points ahead of Stacey Cook in the 125cc Pros, and padded hs second consecutive class title lead with a perfect 1-1 day. He smoked the pack in round one, then spent moto two in a 30-minute dice with Cook. But Cook nearly crashed in a last-lap attempt to pass and had to settle for second. Results 12!i AM: 1. Morshead takes Sears Point RR By Michael Green SONOMA, CA, OCT. 12 West Coast British Racing's Bret Morshead, aboardbis Hap Jones/Avon Tyres/Castrolsponsored Ducati 350, picked 22 up three important items during round seven of the CVRG Cham· pionship Vintage Series at Sears Point; first overall, first in class, plus the 350cc class points lead. As the three classes (50Occ Premier, 250 and 350cc Lightweight) roared from the start, Fred Mork promptly threw his arm into the air just shortly after hooking up second gear, with the crankshaft in his Mork Racing/ Shoei BSA DBD34 Goldstar let go, locking the rear wheel, thus leaving him a spectator in turn one. As for Mork, the start looked great, Morshead pulled a two-gear wheelie past Craig McLean's Motorcycles Unltd., Manx Nonon 350, and Mike Green once again looked as though he'd have the holeshot hom row three, but a missed gear left him close to last into turn one. Andrew Saunders' Triumph TIOOR lead the pack up the hill and down into turn five, where he would lose everything, in'c1uding his bike. Upon exiting tum five and entering turn six, his engine seized, throwing him to the ground, plus blocking the entrance LO six as his bike spun across the track. Both McLean and Morshead had to do a bit of motocrossing down the inside of six, while Dave Troetschler took his Ducati 350 short-stroke down the outside, followed closely by Scott Borem's Bultaco 250 and Dan Phillips' BSA B50. The remainder of the field all made it through safely. On the exit of six the order had changed. Mike Grren (now leading the 250cc class) had charged up through traffic on his WCBRlHap Jones/Avon Tyres/Castrol Ducati 250 10 take fourth away from Scott O~r muller's Ducati 350. As the group entered turn seven with Troetschler leading, followed by Morshead, Dan Phillips and Obermuller, Craig McLean took both Green and Obermuller on the 'exit to chase aLter the leaders. Within one lap, Green had passed and pulled away from Obermuller, gaining on McLean in every tum. Just within striking range, McLean went down in tum II, luckily unhurt. At the same time, a bit farther up the road, Scott Borem's Bultaco had seized on the exit of two, leaving only Morshead to battle with Troetschler. On lap three exiting turn six, Morshead turned up the burners to outrun Troetschler up to seven, his race now would be easier, as one lap later, Troetschler's exhaust pipe came loose in the head, slowing him somewhat, but not enough for Phillips to close in. Phillips had no worries, as he was the only 500cc machine left on the track. By now, Mike Green had a 17plus second lead on the second place 250 of Michael Moore, though Moore's mount was a punched out Honda 175 of 216cc. He also held a 30·second lead over the third-place 250 (seventh· overall) of Michele Bisson with her Ducati- Yetman. Right behind Bisson was the other 250s of Jeff Hecox (Ducati) and Catman Lynaugh (Parilla), though neither having a very good day. In fact, it wasn't a good day at all for most of the 250s. First, number two man in 250cc points, Mike Canepa's Aermacchi went sour on lap two, Hecox's wouldn't pull any rev's and Lynaugh was now a lap down to the leaders and almost to Green when disaster Whiting tops Glen Helen CRCMX By David A. Procida SAN BERNARDINO, CA, OCT. 19 With the Trans-Cal Series now over a large turnout of Pros signed up to do battle at Glen Helen CRC MX. Some nOleabIes included 125cc Pro winner A.J. Whiting, Brian Myerscough, Todd Campbell and Greg Zi tterkopf. In tl)e 125cc Pro race, Yamaha riders Myerscough and Jeff Mabery were leading the way. But as they completed the first lap, Myerscough had dropped back with Mabery taking over the lead with Campbell hot on his tracks. Working his way up through the pack and into third was Suzuki-mounted Whiting. Shortly after, Whiting put the· move on Campbell for second then chased Mabery for the next four laps. On lap seven, Whiting and Mabery diced back and fourth until Whiting got the better drive exiting a turn and flew past Mabery over a tabletop jump. Whiting went on to win the moto ahead of Mabery and Myerscough. Whiting completely dominated the second moto leading from start to finish ahead of Mabery and Campbell. Myerscough dropped out early in the race with mechanical problems. In the 250cc Pro class, Campbell came back and led Whiting and Mabery to the checkered flag. The second round saw Whitin~ drop out with bike problems and Myerscou~h take the win over Mabery and Campbell. Campbell's 1-3 finish, however. was ~ood enou~h to claim the overall. In the Open Pro class, Hondamounted Greg Zitterkopf claimed the victory after beating Yamaha pilot Tim Cauby. Results PEE WEE A: 1. Robby Hammond (Yam). PEE WEE B: 1. Jerry Aleman (Yam~ 2. William Horstman got the early lead and never backed off the throttle to take the win in moto one of the Open Novice class. Behind Horstman, Tarr and Frank Lux battled for second. On lap two Lux went down and dropped back to fourth. Thomas Sears pKked up third. but Tarr was too far ahead for Sears to c
