Can-Am'slatest Deet of air-cooled, off-road motorcycles includes four ASE (enduro/hare scrambles) models and one trials machine. Can-Am has dropped out of the motocross scene by eliminating all of its motocross models Cor 1987; the company will concentrate strictly on enduro, hare scrambles and trials competition. Can-Am is marketing a full spectrum oC enduro/hare scram bles models between 200 and 500cc. The smallest displacement ASE is a 200, the largest is a 500, and in-between CanAm is offering a 250, and an a!l-new 406 ASE, which replace6 last year's !l50. Highlighting Can-Am's 1987 offroad lineup is the 406 ASE. Like the 200 and 250 ASEs, the 406 has an a.ir-cooled motor, a new rear singleshock linkage design, a removable aluminum rear subCrame section, and a new color scheme. All the ASE models, except the 500, have red fenders and a red gas tank. The seats, frames and Cront number plates are white. The 500 ASE has black plastic, while the frame, seat and front number plate are white. Rear suspension on the 200, 250 and 406 ASEs is handled by a piggyback reservoir White Power shock attached to an all-new, more progressive linkage system that Can-Am calls Direct Link P.R. (progressive reaction) suspension. Rear wheel travel on each of the three bikes is a long 12.5 inches. Despite the long travel suspension, seat height has been reduced 1.5 inches thanks to an a])-n'ew frame. The front Marzocchi M I forks have been retuned and produce 11.8 inches of wheel travel. The new frame on the 200; 250 and 406 has a steeper 27-degree head angle for quicker turning, and the wheelbase is shortened by almost two inches. Incorporated to the new frame is a reshaped and larger gas tank which holds 3.25 gallons. Other chassis changes include a stronger Grimeca front disc brake and a redesigned aluminum swingarm. The Reynolds 5!11-construeted frame, combined with the new aluminum subframe, has reduced overall weight on 200, 250 and 406cc ASEs by 15 pounds, The ASE200 and 250 have refined Rotax two-stroke motors for quicker throttle response, while Can-Am c1a.ims the new 406cc Rotax gives the 406 ASE an eight percent horsepower increase and 20% more torque over last year's !l50 ASE. Other motor changes include a new Answer eroduets-made integral muffler/spark arrestor, rubber blocking of the cyl.inder to help reduce engine noise and 'a larger airbox. As an optional item, Can-Am is offering an ATK system which can be fitted on the 200, 250 and 406 ASEs. The only motorcycle in Can-Am's 1987' lineup that ma.inta.ins old styling is the 500 ASE. Held over from last year's 500 is the Quad Link II White' Power rear suspension and frame design. The bike does feature a la.t:ger !I.5 gallon gas tank. . On the slower side of things, CanAm is still offering a serious mount for the trials enthusiast - the new !l00 AT. Can-Am bills the !loo AT as the lightest !lOOcc trials motorcycle on the market, with a claimed dry weight of 192 pounds. Power is supplied by a !lOOcc Rotax motor with 11 27mm Amal carburetor and a sixspeed gearbox. Chassis-wise the 300 AT comes stock with Michelin tires and gold-anodized aluminum Akront rims. It has a 1.45 gallon polyethylene fuel tank, and to help reduce, weight, high-tensile-Cabricated aluminum is utilized in both the frame and swingarm. It also (eatures the same color combination as the new ASE models. • t ,.0 S (1) ;> o Z .AMERICA'S ONLY W~EKLY MOTORCYCLE ACTIO TELEVISION SERIES-.. ...-!!!!!!!!'~ ~ Motorcycle World with Larry Huffman via satellite This Sunday's special guest is: ** BOB "HURRICANE" HANNAH ** Winner of the 1986 Unadilla 250 USGP It comes to you live, every Sunday night fTom 10 to 11 p.m. KOLA 99.9 FM KTIM 100.9 FM KYLO 105.5 FM XTRA "Extra Gold" 690 AM Los Angeles/Riverside Orange Co.lSan Bernardino San Francisco/Oakland Sacramento Slron~est AM Station in ·Western U.S. Call in and talk with all the top personalities and be part or motorcycle world. 1-(800) 228-5249 or (714) 951-1962 Spomo>ed by I~,l 15
