Gary Hoke was third, Jeff Grove fourth and Todd Wol£e was fmh. With Wolfskill OUl, everyone ex· pected Pemoney to be Pinney's sole challenge in the second 125cc Expert molO, but it wasn't in me cards. Pentoney crashed and injured his hand, leaving Pinney with a cakewalk win. Wolfe held Grove off all molO long, but relaxed on the last lap, leuing Grove sneak by for second. John Mock fini5hed fourth and Steve Simpson was fifth. In the first Open Expert moto, Chip Anacker took the holeshot and the early lead followed by Greg Lykens, Roben Huston and William Runkles. As Anacker opened up his lead. Lykens and Huston bauled over second with Runkles lurking in the background. Lykens and Huston coflided ove.r the double jumps and Runkles jumped into second place. Then Runkles shifted into his auack mode and reeled·in Anacker. By the sixth lap, Runkles was out in front and pulling away. Back in third. Huston was feeling the four-stroke footsteps of Breu Friedel's ATK. Friedel pushed Hus· ton hard, but Huston kept his KTM in fronl. At the finish, it was Runkles, Anacker, HUSlon, Friedel and Jeff Mercer. In the second Open Expert moto, Runkles took the holeshot and waved bye·bye to the pack. After fighting off an early challenge from Lykens, he took the wire-to·wire win with no pwblem5. Huston ran a strong second pres5ured by Anacker, until Anacker bailed in the whoops and dropped out of the race. Lykens took third, with Freidel fourth and Mercer a con· sistent fifth. Faria sweeps Ascot Speedway By Scott Daloisio GARDENA, CA, ocr. 16 Mike Faria shrugged off the disappointment of a fjfth place finish at the U.S. National and came back to sweep the Scratch side of the program on "50'5 Night" at Chris Agajanian 's Ascot South Bay Stadium. The night of racing marked the first appearance of newly~crowned National Champion Bobby Schwartz and he performed admirably. Schwartz made both First Division main5 placing seco':ld and fourth, after starting in gate four, in the Scratch. Faria sponsored by ShoeilTsubakil OilzaillGeorge WennlCody Products Jawa, came off the hard slick gate three, but he took the lead into the first turn ahead of Steve Lucero and Ronnie Correy. Correy pushed Lucero back to the third spot in turn two and then set his sights on Faria. Like Faria, Correy had a very disappointing night at the National, but the 19·year-old from Fullerton, California was resilant at Ascot. He stalked Faria, and by the fourth and final lap he had cut Faria's lead down to a couple of bike lengths. Faria managed lO hold off the youngster, and they both wheelied ·across the line in front of an appreciative crowd. The surprise package of the night turned out to be Mike Mazzacane. The 21-year-old from Riverside, California also bad a di53ppoiming night at tbe National; he was the fir5t reserve and only managed to get one ride. But at Ascot, Mazzacane had the Part's Piusiiniand CanvaslPig Ironl Oakley10.). 's Ticket Service GM fly· ing. Mazzacane actually rode around Faria and took the lead in their Scratch semi, only to [all in the next corner. In the Handicap main, Mazzacane made amends by not [ailing. and winning (as he did in his heat and semi) from the 30 yard line. Tom Burba held down the point position until lap three, when Mazzacane wem around him and into the big pay. check spot. Burba came back and
