Crevier dominates Shannonville RR By Jere",y Fleming SHANNONVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA, OCT. 12 Vancouver-based Yamaha rider Steve Crevier dominated action at the final event of the 1986 Eastern Canada road racing season, the RACE organized Twin Two Hour EndurancelTGIF Sprints weekend. After winning the Open Endurance race on Saturday, Crevier took first in Pro 750cc Production, Open Production, 750cc Superbike and the Pro Open Superbike feature on Sunday. No rider has ever won four sprint events in one RACE weekend. The TGIF Sprints weekend, incorporating the fifth annual running of the split-displacement Endurance races, marked the 10th anniversary o[ motorcycle road racing at the Shannon ville Motorsport Park circuit. Since all the National and Regional Canadian Championships were over with, RACE took the opportunity to run Sunday's sprints on the old, seventurn course; unused since the circuit opened on Canadian Thanksgiving in 1976. The first final on Saturday was the 600cc Endurance Two Hour and 37 riders LOok the green £lag. David Grummeu immediately jumped into the lead on the Bob's MOLOrsports Suzuki RG500 he was sharing with Mike Clements. By the half-hour mark, Grummeu had put a lap on the [ield but a waved yellow passing miscue caused o££icials to give Grummett a two-lap penalty. Such was Grummett's pace, however, (he was running Pro 600 Production sprint race lap times for his whole hour), that Clements was in the lead shortly after he took over from Grummeu at the one hour mark. Mark McColman was a clear second overall at half distance on the Team Flamingo Yamaha RZ350 Superbike .and at the hour mark he handed over to fellow Amateur and former Trials champ Jamie McGregor. Pro David Bissonette moved David Church's Yamaha RZ500 from last up to tbird after an hour, but no team seemed capable of challenging the. Bob's Motorsports duo. While Clements cruised to an easy win, late race attention focused on the Yamaha FZ600 of unretired Pro Jame PIetsch. After brother John ran midfield for the first shift, Pietsch began his first race of 1986 as the fastest rider of the second hour. At the finish he was a close third behind the McColman/McGregor pair after having blitzed by a cruising Church on the Brock Cycle RZ500. The Open Two Hour was far more exciting with Suzuki GSXR750 mounted Grummett leading Amateur Michael Gri££iths, Pro Jean Paquet, Pro Robin Hardy and Amateur Pierre Martin. Grummeu stayed ahead [or 10 minutes, trying to set up Clements for an unprecedented second Twin Two Hour sweep. But eventually Paquet got by and set 0[[ at winning sprint speeds, pulling into a big lead. Grummeu fell back, Hardy pitted with bike problems and Griffith and Martin crashed. While an embarrassed Martin handed over top Pro to Norm Murphy, Paquet lapped most o[ the field and slick-equipped Tom Douglas moved Crevier's Production class Yamaha FZ750 into a battle [or s.econd with Grummett. As rookie Pros and regular sparring partners Crummett and Douglas kept the crowd entertained with constant place trading, Paquet moved up and lapped them both. All three leaders pitted for gas and rider changes at the hour mark. Clements took over from Grummett with no drama, Douglas overshot his pit (it was his first ever Endurance race) [RK J[JlrrIl~E"" S ERIC'S MOTORCYCLE CO.
