The Gran Prix Series ~roved to be veryeo, mpetitivein its first year. With Knapp's round six victory, the number of riders visiting the winner's circle in the series came to five. Knipp was the only double winner with Ed Key, Dan Chivington, Robby Braunscheidel and Knapp each winning one round. Coming into the last race of the series Knipp held the lead with 194 pqints. Thre.e other riders had a mathematical chance to win the series; Ed Key (172 points). Mark Tanner (170 points) and Gene Burcham (151 points). The riders gridded to start the race under a light drizzle. Knipp mounted rain tires on hisTZwhilemo tofthe other competitors went with racing compound treel tin'S. Starter Earl Stees threw the green flag and it was Suwki GSXR750mounted Tanner taking the early lead. Burcham and ChivingtoTI followed Tanner, but by lap thr eof the 20 lap race Knipp had worked his way into second behind Tanner. Knipp got by Tanner on the rrext lap and started to sprint away from the field. Dave Knapp, Scott Zampach and Martin Miller began moving up through the field joining Chivington in the lead group hasing Knipp. By midway in the contest Knipp extended his lead to six seconds over the tight secon place batue between Chivington and Knapp. ovices SCOtt Zampach and Martin Miller were going at it for fourth just behind the Chivington/Knapp duel. As the race went into the final laps the driule had stopped and a dry line developed. The advantage Knipp had with his rain tires was gone, Chivington and Knapp were gaining. At the white flag Knapp drafted past Knipp going into tum one. Chivington also was on Knipp's tail with one lap to go. The trio were in heavy traffic at this point and Knapp .got around some of the lapped riders at the right time leaving Knipp and Chivington stranded behind the slower riders. At the flag a triumphant Knapp crossed the line about a second ahead of Knipp and Chivington. Knapp took home 1000 for the finale win aboard his Ray C's POrt /Vance & Hines/ Leetron Carbs FZ750. . "That last lap I just gritted my teeth and crawled under the paint on every corner trying to hold off Knipp and Chivington," Knapp said. "I was expecting Knipp's TZ to draft pa t meon the straightaway, luckily I had enough lead to hold on." Knipp was disappointed by not winning the race but he still had the series title. "I looked back and saw 'him (Knapp) coming but I thought it was Ed Key," he said. "When Knapp passed me and started puUing away I knew I had blown it." Doug Polen along with brother James traveled to Michigan to compete in the final round of the GSXR Series in the North Central region. In both the A and B Production races Chivington led the first two laps before Polen turned up the wick on his Denton Motorcycle Center/Michelinv'Shoei/RSC/Ru Chain Suzuki GSXRs and won by large margins. Eric Johnson jams at Las Vegas MX By Dick Goodwin .LAS VEGAS, NV. ·EPT. 21 Shane John on lit up the scoreboard a t Las Vegas Motocross Park today, as he moked the competition in the strong 250cc Intennediate division. Shane, riding the only Yamaha in the race, gated second to start race one, but soon fle\ pa t holcshot ace Brad Simcox· in midair 0[[ the first jump to take the lead. From that point on, he was never headed, a~ he kept increasing his margin of victory all the way to the finish line. Frank Singer brought his Honda up to challenge the streaking Simcox for second place. Simcox and Singer banged bars as they battled furiously arou nd the track for the rest of the race. Finally, tWO turns from the fin· ish, Singer washed out trying LO stuff his way pas.!, thus giving Simcox the hard-earned second place. Singer recovered to hold third. Johnson rang down the curtain on race two very quickly, blasting out in front in the first turn and carving up the track on his way to another uncontested victory. The figh t for second was again between imcox and Singer, with Singer even tuall y flashing past Simcox on the Desert Fre.eway during lap four. imcox held to a strong third. The final tally had Johnson in the winner's circle, Singer second, Sim ox third, and Alex Hill in fourth. Craig Mojeske mastered the Vets Intermediate class after two close, exciting races with a detennined Jim Barnson. Mojeske nailed down the holeshotto start race one, ju t ahead of Gil Boer . Barn on was on the move, however, and within a lap had fought hi way into second place and was hounding Moje ke for the lead. The two raced around the track, with Barnson trying to storm past and Mojeske shutting down his every chance. At the finish line, it was Mojeske by the slimmest of margins. MOLO two was even closer. Mojeske grabbt'Qlhe holeshotagain but Barnson, more determined than ever, shot past him in the first corner. Now it was Mojeske's turn to eat dust. The two diced furiously lap after lap until Mojeske was able to struggle past Barnson late in the race. The two flew across the finish line table-top with less than a bike length separating them. Mojeske just barely won this intense duel. Final postings had r
