Autrey masters MeadowsST By Derryl Anderson PORTLAND, OR, SEPT. 28 Woodland's Dean Autrey (Honda) took the overall win in the 500cc Amateur class during today's short track held at I the Portland Meadows Race Track in Portland. A small rider turnout forced most classes to be combined and scored separately. In moto one, Autrey got the holeshot followed closely by Tenino's Aaron Waggoner, Mike Fetty and Ryan Anderson. Waggoner wasted no time in pressuring Autrey, as he pulled up next to the leader in turns one and two. Back and forth the duo battled but Autrey continued tDcome out on lOp. At the back Fetty an.d . Anderson were having a race of their own. At the checkered £lag the order went Autrey, Fetty, Anderson and Waggoner, who slid out in turn two with less than a lap to go. In the second race, Autrey got the scratch ahead of Waggoner, Anderson and Fetty. The four of them freighttrained it right to the finish in the same order. In the final moLO, Autrey got the start with Waggoner right next to him.on the outside. Behind them in order was Anderson, who was Irying to get used LO his new 125, and then young Fetty. Autrey was t>are!y able to keep up his domination over Waggoner, as the two went at it I~p after lap. With a lap to go, Autrey pulled about eight.yards on Waggoner, who had a big advantage on the two youngsters. At the final checkered £lag the order went Autrey, Waggoner, Anderson and Fetty. Chandler tops ·ltIfonterey ST By Mike Vancil MONTEREY, CA, ocr. II Kurt Chandler, younger brother to Doug Chandler, showed that not all the talent in the Chandler family belongs to the famous land highly successful Doug. Kurt has learned a few things about racing. mOLOrcycles, and he proved he had at least mastered the di£ficult knack of flingi ng a 500cc four-stroke around a l'-mile short track oval. The R&D Enterprises promoted, AMA-sanctioned and Stroh's Beer-sponsored short track events at the Monterey County Fairgrounds Rodeo Arena again drew an excellent turnout of racers and fans. In the final 500cc Expert class, Paul Iwanaga was the odds-on favorite, as he had won the heat race in a masterful display of superior riding. Atthe green light it was Iwanaga taking a slight advantage. over Chandler and his Salinas XR Honda. The remainder of the competitors were battling furiously for positions behind the front running duo. Bob Damron, ILl)1 N ~VI Jl:>~ILl U;:JIl u" Ol"dL) ~frtmJfJ>1.NIU=ftPl~ ~JG~f dena at the Ascot Junior Nallonal was battling with Todd Bridges. Midway through the final Bridges was able to put his Rotax under Damron's Honda in one of the tight corners and grabbed third place with intentions of reeling in second-placer Chandler. Chancier had ideas of his own and capitalized on a very small bobble by Iwanaga. Thollgh Iwanaga tried several hard drives o[f the corners he could not gain any leverage on Chandler. At the checkers it was Chandler, Iwanaga, Bridges and Damron. Action in the 500cc Junior class included two separate heat races to qualify for the final. At the green light second heat race winner, Joe Carrera slammed into the first corner with Mark Butler and Ricky Smith. Gary Vincelet, winner of the first heat got bumped in the traffic and couldn't recover for a good finish. Exiting turn twO on the first lap, it quickly turned into a two-rider battle between Mark Butler and Ricky Smith. Ricky stayed close enough to Butler by working on him as they exited the corners. Butler was going in the corners just hard enough so that when he squared the corner he had straight, good traction position for the straights. At the checkers it was Butler followed by Smith, Carrera and Danny, Cahoon. a:; ..0 8 V ;;> o Z Results PEE WEE 4-6: 1. Junior Alve,"az (Yam). PEE WEE 7-8: 1. Jeff Gabhan (Vaml; 2.
