Lackey and Bertram both DNF the'
race; Lackey retired when his Kawasaki KX500 attempted to suck the air
cleaner through the motor because
Lackey forgot to bring the air filters
metal support cage LO the race with
him! Bertram reportedly seized his·
bike on a fast logging road.
The Intermediate class riders, who
started the race one minute behind
the Experts, were led by 250cc rider
Joe Thomas. Thomas was followed
in the 250cc class by local rider Dennis DelBiaggio and Jack McBride.
Brad Coleman won the Qpen Junior
race, while Greg Peterson topped the
200cc"class.
Local rider Marvin Miller was the
overall winner in the Novice race,
held in the afternoon when the Experts and Juniors had completed their
race. Miller established an early lead
on his Yamaha YZ490, and was never
challenged. Miller was followed across
the finish line by Kirk Smith and
Kelly Franklin.

"Kurt and I were really on the gas
today," said Bean. "I knew we would'
have a good score; because we were
motocrossing it through all the
woods. It's too bad Kurt lost his card,
I had le.t him go ahead of me in the
one woods section where the emergency check was and be had me beat
by about five seconds."
Brian Mull, riding a Husky 250,
took LOp AA honors with a threepoint loss ahead of fellow Michigan
rider AI Randt. Kawasaki rider Jeff
Fredelle had an off day when he was
hal at one check and lost two poims
and then lost several late points in
another section where a bridge crossing a deep ditch broke. "There were
riders stuck on the bridge and down
in the ditch when I got there. It cost
me several minutes," said Fredette.
The river crossing proved LO be
popular with the spectaLOrs as they
got a chance to see some riders go
swimming when they found some
deep spots. The swift current also
swept the wheels out from under
many riders, causing them LO fall
over and then have LO hum for their
machines when the water completely
covered their .bikes.
Gary Hazel took Hi-Point B on his
Honda 250. "I just tried LO keep Bean
and Hough in sight all day," said
Hazel. "I knew if I could stay near
them I would do well. The river botLOrn land that we rode for about three
miles was pretty slick and I lost a few
extra pOints there."

In the Open A class, TomBuckles
edged Darr Griswald out for the win
by one-point, three to Griswald's
four.

Niemi nabs win
at Elko Motocross

John Niemi combined 2-1
motos to top the.250cc Expert
class at the last Moto Pro Racing
MX of theyeaT. His win came
atthe expense of Jeff Olden berg, who
won the first maLO but DNF the
second when his from tire went flat.
Donny Schmit snapped up both l25cc
. Expert motos and Jeff Sorensen took
home LOp Open class honors.
The Mota Pro crew worked overtime LO shape up the track for this
race. hauling many loads of sand in
LO the long straight to fill in low spots
left waterlogged by the rainy summer.
Over 200 riders competed.
Oldenberg brought an '87 Honda,
out and sliced his way through the
pack after a poor start in the first
250cc mota. Niemi held the lead in
the early part of the maLO, bu t coulcln' t
hold a£[ the attack Olden berg brought
LO bear. Pat Riley took third for his
best maLO in his young Expert class
career. Tim Bernloehr and Scott
Cripps ran hard LO take fourth and
fifth, respectively.
Niemi took the second maLO after a
challenge [rom Olden berg went flat.
Riley stayed upright LO hold second
with Rich Pearson recovering from
.some LOugh luck to take third. Jim
Olson ran strong after taking the
holeshot and took fourth with Cripps
once again fifth.
Schmit has proven unbeatable at
the local level and he reeled off two
wins in the 125cc Expert division.
Brian Fern and David Tait battled
over second in the first mota, with
Fern holding on LO the flag.
Brandon Hopkins passed Richard·
Burns on the thi'rd lap to trail Schmit
at the flag in the second mota. Rich
Pfeifsticker and Robbie Engstrom
rounded out the LOp four.
