NAME _ AOORESS _ CITY STATE lIP _ 3. Mail to: Michel Mercier (11) leads Rueben McMurter (24) and Gary Goodfellow (99) in the Pro Open Superbike race in Canada; Mercier won_ The stan of the Pro Open Superbike 20-lap feature was delayed when Art "The Dart" Robbins had trouble with his Rothmans Honda RS500 on the grid. Another ring failure was suspected, and defending cham.p Robbins could only watch as his title evapor~lted. Gary Goodfellow led from the flag on his Leitner and Bushl McBride's/Dainese/Shoei Suzuki GSXR750R, with Sports Afield III ShoeilTreeniCastrollWiseco/Dunlop-backed Yamaha FZ750 factory pilot Rueben McMurter second and Mercier's Rocket/CAM 2 Dunlopl PhoenixlYoshimura GSX third. While Goodfellow held off the advances of McMurter, Mercier got wound up to have a'go at both of them. With the title already in the hag, Mercier had already announced his views of the final race: "For me, the pressure is off. I have the number one, so now I want to win the last one, ride only to win, to prove that I'm not only the most consistent but also the fastest." On lap three, Mercier powered by McMurter and then tried to get Goodfellow coming out of Shannonville's tightest turn. After getting completely sideways, straight up and down when he should be leaned over, Mercier struggled to stay on the track, almost collecting McMurter in the process. On the next lap, he tried almost the same move and it worked! Now in the lead, Mercier cranked off a few near-record laps, pulling far enough ahead (three seconds) of Goodfellow and McMurter to discourage any late race charges. Struggling with an injured back, Goodfellow was happy to settle for second, although McM uner stayed right with him throughout the race. Fourth went to Tom Walther on thej.P. FeurgesonlVancouverSuzuki GSXR750 after a race long chase by the Pacific Yamaha/Leitner and Bush/Kiwi-backed Yamaha FZ7500f Steve Crevier. Crevier was running his ex-McMurter superbike with a used stock motor, and "Squid Kid" just didn't have the ponies to get by ever-steady Walther. Earlier in the program, Mercier ran away with the Pro 750cc Superbike final while McMurter struggled to keep second from the hard charging Douglas. Rookie Pro Douglas was making only his third superbike start on his insurance write-off 1985 Yamaha FZ, with support from Sports Afit;ld II/Polisport PirellilAcmel Castrol. While Douglas got alongside "The Rueb" under braking on the last couple of laps, he decided that third and a good performance was better than cleaning out Yamaha teammate McMurter in a desperation move. Mercier won by a large margin over Circul.tion Dept. CYCLE NEWS Inc. P.O. Box 49B long Beoch, CA 90801 ·049B --------------------------------------------------------- McMuner, with image-building Douglas right behind for third. Much attention in 750cc Superbike focused on Goodfellow. After a bad cra h in an earlier Production final, Goodfellow was barely able to mount his GSX to go after the 750 title. But ride he did, and a cautious fourth gave "Goodie" the Pro 750 Superbike crown. Results AM 125 GP: 1. RlckC8uvier(Hon); 2. Mike Busby (Vom); 3. Fred Bekker (Hon). AM F·2: 1. (213) 531-2767 By Terry Rezek LANCASTER, CA, SEPT. 28 Arcadia. CA CRC had a huge turnout of riders for their regular motocross at LA County Raceway today, but it was Eddie Hicks who dominated the Pro ranks with wins in all four motos of the 125 and 250cc classes. Hicks was surprised in moto one o[ the 125cc race by a rider new to the Pro ranks, Mike Pascarella. Pascarella had fueled his bike on nervous energy and shot out o[ the gate at the start of the moto to lead the race for. three laps. Hicks let him burnout, then set him up for a smooth pass out • of the first hairpin of lap four. Once in the lead, Hicks pulled steadily away and won thefirst of his string of motos. In moto two, Hicks took the lead right 0[[ the start line and went right for his second moto and first race win of the day. The 250cc Pro race had 22 starters and Hicks must have been napping for he was in the middle of the pack when the gate dropped. He passed 10 (818) 574-7625 ALHAMBRA YAMAH'As-...
