Riding in the' SOOcc Junior class, Vincelet could only manage a seventhplace finish in his heat race after suffering mechanical problems. But he came back to win the final after dicing heavily with Mark Buder. By the start of the main, Vincelet had his Yamaha TTSOO in working order and was hungry for the win. When the green flag dropped, Vincelet launched his Yamaha into a slight lead over Butler. The two leaders where the main allTactions as they diced almost side by side. Butler pressured Vincelet in every turn, but Vincelet was determined to keep BUller at bay no maller the cost. With the white flag in sight, Vincelet held on to his slim lead over Buder to take the well-earned vicLOry over the pesky ButLer. Steve Sullenger wound up taking third overall. Butler, however, didn't leave the Paso Robles Rodeo Grounds empty handed. In the Veteran/Old Timer class, Buder completely dominated in the main. Early in the race, Joseph Kamm supplied a steady stream of pressure then backed off when Bultaco rider Russell Barnet motored up and passed Kamm for second. By that time, Butler was long gone as he slid on home for the win. Barnedinished second ahead of Kamm. Results PEE WEE; 1. Jeff Gabhart (Yam); 2. Junior AJvernaz (Yam). 60 MINI: ,. Dirago, Spear, Mitchellhead MSC Motocross By John Spear WALLKILL, NY, SEPT. 21 The races for number one plates for the Metropolitan Spons Committee ended at the Walden Playboy's MX, today. Jeff Dirago sealed his first-ever number one plate after sweeping both 12Scc moLOS to puta lock on the title. In the Open Experts, Mike Spear put a clincher on his second straight number one plate with another 1-1 day. Just as happy as those two was Doug Mitchell who won the 250cc Expert overall for the first time this season. Mitchell saw Spear take a wicked fall at the start of the first mow. Mitchell then outdueJed Dennis Decker to finish first in that mow with Todd Dippel third and John Ryan fourth. Spear who lay stunned for a full lap finished 17th. Spear came back to pull the holeshot in the second moLO and run away with the win. Keith Mann pushed the leader briefly with Ryan later pushing Mann. Mitchell, meanwhile, was content to cruise in fourth place, knowing he had the overall as long as hedidn't let Decker by. Decker, in fifth, never was able LO mount a serious threat, so his 2-S afternoon was good only for a fourth overall. Mann's S-2 was second and Ryan's 4-3 was third. Dirago's five year quest for a number one plate ended successfully, as he swept both 12Scc Expert moLOS, gi ving him enough points to prevent 'anyone from catching him during the final three races of the year. Dirago, who has consistently placed near the top during his Expert career, used a series of high finishes this season to get his number one plate. It was only fitting that he should clinch it at his home track with a perfect afternoon. Rob McCullough's 2-3 was good for second with Ed Foedish's 4-2 taking third. Spear's usual I-I day in the Open Expert sealed his second consecu tive title in that class. Despite winning every Open moLO but three during the season, Spear couldn't clinch the title uinil this race because Mitchell had been second nearly every week. But this week, Keith Mann had a pair of seconds and Mitchell had to seml<; for third with a 4-3 afternoon. Mike Speckman surprised all the front run· ners with a third in the first moLO, his best finish of the year. • Results 125 EX: ,. Jeff Oirago (Kaw); 2. Rob McCullough (Han); 3.
