Melton tops
Lookout Mountain
Enduro
By Phyllis Apone
CHATTANOOGA, TN, SEPT. 14
Mike Melton, the 1985-86
SE&TRA Enduro Champion
who mastered Lookout Mountain last year, defended his title -
22
once again against such competitors
as KTM's Kevin Hines, Barry Higgins, John Fero, Mitch McRee and
Joe Hopkins.
What the promoters knew would
be a tough course ahead, the riders
soon found out. Allen Gravitt, who
helped lay oulthese treacherous trails
said that they wanted to set the course
for another 30 miles, but since most
of it was slippery, rocky and dangerous, they had to keep it a short 60
mile run. Allen also predicted that
the overall winner would drop at
least 25 points today. And a sure bet
that was, as Melton dropped 26 points
to not only take home a grandeur
overall clock-trophy, but he also won
.a trophy for the fastest Husky rider
donated by Spots Cycle Center, $100
donated by Pruitts Food Town, and
another $50 donated by another
Honda/Husky dealer.
Fero, who only dropped 31 points
on his Can-Am, walked away with
the firsl-place trophy in the AA class
and fourth overall. Fero said that he
hurt his leg earlier in the day and he
just lost some of his fire.
.
Luck was not with Hines today, as
he lost a lot of time with a [Jat tire.
The promoters didn't want spectators or pit crews anywhere near the
trials, except for one spectator point
at a strip mine. But the hard-working
H&H pit crew managed to stay pretty
close to the trails to help out anyone
in need (which there were plenty of).
But Hines didn't go home empty
handed. Along with .the third-place
trophy in the AA class, Kevin, along
with McRee and Higgins took first
place in the Team class representing
H&H KTM in Mableton, Georgia.
Kevin also won $50 for the "Furthest
Travelled" award, but unbeknownst
to him, it was redonated to an Illinois
rider.
Smiling all the way to pick up his
first place trophy in the 250cc A class
was Bryan. Adams. Adams ended up
third overall in the race with 29
points dropped behind second place
Joey Hopkins, with 28 points. Hopkins, riding on row 33, said that he
got to the race today just at his key
time, so be was pretty "keyed" up. all
day.
The 200cc A class was one of the
many classes that went down LO the
tie breakers. Although Keith Shelton
overpowered the class on his CanAm, the tie breaker was between
Robby Travis and Kent Stanley. Both
. riders tied even to the seconds, so the
