The race between Dennis Decker, Frank Spearandio, Doug Mitchell, Keith Mann, Todd Dippel and Rich Alexander saw five differen't riders leading the pack. Decker had gotten off the line with Spear and stayed even with him for a few laps, and when Spear fina]]y brdke free, Decker had IS seconds 6n the five riders behind him. In third was Sperandio followed by Alexander, Mann, Mitchell and Dippel, who had made up for a bad start and cut through the pack to latch on to the back o~ this group of riders. Sperandio, an Expert for just over a year, appeared to be handling the pressure being dished out by Mann, last year's number one plate holder, who had gotten by Alexander. Dippel, meanwhile, had used his momentum to take him by Mitchell. Decker, by himself in second, didn't realize that the pack behind was closing in on him as he lost contact with Spear. On lap five, Sperandio became the firstlo feel the heat as he slid out on a tight right hander and all of a sudden found himself back in seventh. A lap later, Alexander went down on the same corner and Mann overrode a berm on the next corner as Dippel moved into third and Mitchell to fourth. Sperandio, who recovered quickly, was now back in fifth but Mann was out of contention as he dropped to seventh. Alexander pulled 0([ completely to save himself for the Qpen Expert. By this time, Decker had found his IS-second lead in second place all gone and he wa embroiled in a desperate. battle for his spot. Halfway through the last lap, Decker stalled .his bike and Dippel took over with Mitchell still on his rear wheel While aJI this was going on in front of him, Kevin"McCarthy, down from District 3, was just cruising around and finally moved into sixth although he wasn't close enough to challenge those battling for second through fifth. With Spear finishing 45 seconds ahead, all eyes turned to the battle between Dippel, Mitchell and Decker. Mitchell made his move on the long straight going into the final two corners, but Dippel held the inside line to cut off the pass and came home second. Decker tried to squeeze by Mitchell on the inside, but Mitchell had enough of a lead to hold him off. Dippel's strong ride gave him second overall with a 3-2 after- noon, trailing Spear's usual I-I. Decker finished third with a 2-4 while Mann's 4-7 was fourth. Results 125 EX: 1. Kun McMillen (Hen); 2. Rob McCullough (Han); 3. Ed Foedish (Yam). 250 EX: 1. Mike Spear (Kaw); 2. Tichenor doubles at Gatorback MX By Athie Sanders GAINESVILLE, FL, SEPT. 14 Kawasaki-pilot Ronnie Tichenor claimed overall wins in two classes - 125cc A and 250cc A - during round one of the World Sports-sponsored Florida Cup Series at the Gatorback Cycle Park today. Rain plagued Gatorback the past several weeks rendering the track a mud bog and necessitating rerouting it to higher ground. By day's end the scorching sun dried the soupy muck into tacky-clay. The variation in track conditions resulted in dramatic changes in some second mota leaders, but Tichenor found slop and hardpack equaJly suitable and went home with the gold. Chris Marlin was quickest of[ the line, but Vince DeVane moved to the front soon after the start of the first eight lap 125cc A class moto. He held the lead until mud grabbed his front tire during lap four and flipped him over. Tichenor flew into the lead, leaving DeVane to pick his way back up through the pack. As the white flag flew, DeVane was three seconds behind second-placed Marlin. Marlin l;1eld him of[, leaving Tichenor to cruise on in for the win. Gary Paul and Eric Yarnell rounded out the top five positions. DeVane took the lead in mota two with Tichenor and Glenn Somerville following close behind. Tichenor closed the gap at the end as they worked their way through slower riders, but never moved up to put real heat on DeVane. Somerville held on for third with Paul and Robert McElroy following. DeVane's 3-1 moto finishes were only good enough for second overall as Tichenor's 1-2 sent him home with the win.
