Since track rules prohibit two byes in a row, Bertoleuewas seeded in the fourth round as the lO-bike field was now down to uve. Buege ran Plummer again, eliminating him for tbe rest of the day. In round five, Russ Hildabrand, on a brand new ride, haoto face Bertolette. With a great effort, Bertolette sent hilJ1 back to the pits for the rest of the afternoon. Only Buege had a perfect record by round six and Bertolette, with one loss, was the last rider he had to eliminate. Bertolette, however, had claimed earlier that day during a TV interview that "the big cube Hog engine might beat him out of the hole, but he could pass him before the finish." Doingjust that, he inched Buegeat the line setting up the need for tbe "do or die" round. Both riders carefully prepared tbe track during the mandatory 15 minutes cool-down time. With mattocks swinging furiously, they each dug a trench to ensure maximum traction. They staged and the lights flashed green. Bertolette with the best ride of his two-year career, nipped Buege at the finisb. . In Top Fuel, Paul Plummer challenged Kevin Carr's Suzuki twice after an earlier loss. Poor trench preparation resulted in the Harley fueler settling for second. Randy Williamson did an instant replay of Hog Gas in the Middle Gas class.
