first moto the checkers fell first to Ted Pippin on his San Jose-based CR Honda. Following his lines and staying out of trouble was Don Tofft; neither rider had a clear advantage over the other. In the second moto for this dass the holeshot went to Jev Valez but he gave up the lead when pressured hard by Mike Smart. The good fortune of Pippin went away when hegotmired in sixth place and could not seem to progre s further. mart's first moto ride was about as di mal as Pippin's second. The e factors added up to an overall victory for Don Tofft with a 2-4 evening. Results PEE WEE: ,. Nick Pappas (Vam). BO MINI BEG: ,. Wayne Ward (Vam): 2. Troy Lapp (Hon). BO MINI JR: ,. Matt Arena (Kaw) Kollman cleans up Texas MX By Joe Milan SAN ANTO 10, TX, SEPT. 6-7 The finals of the second annual South Texas Series, conducted on two consecu tive even ings of racing, turned out to be a sterner test of motocross ability and endurance than many riders anticipated. Rain of Ark-floating proportions turned the final round of motos into a muddy melee, with a number of first round leaders falling victim to the mire. Jimmy Kollman was one of the fortunate ones, as he skated to the overall series title in the Open Intermediate class. Marvin McKim, after a dismal sixth place on the opening evening, came roaring back the following night on his crowd-pleasing 600cc Yamaha four-stroke to edge Hank Hodes for runner-up and take third overall for the series. Nacogdoches Honda pilot Ray Burgess gave his sponsors JT Racing and Sonny Burgess Honda plenty of reason to celebrate with his determined come-from-behind effort in the muck to capture overall honors in the 250cc Intermediate class. First round leader Andy Bradshaw, who was flawless on the dry track the preceding night, got a poor start the next time out and did an admirable job of salvaging third overall behind Jerry Benner. Six-year-old Carter Schneider, the pride of Houston's House of Wheels, rode like a seasoned Pro en route to the big trophy in the Pee Wee class to highlight some unusually close small-bore activity. Schneider left Spencer Trainer and Cody Atkins in his wake in garnering the win. Rowdy Flanagan guided his Flanagan Muffler Special Kawasaki to top placing in the 61cc class after a furious struggle with Good Times Cycles of Tyler's representative Clint Latham. Latham's chances for the overall win on his Sonny Margravor prepared KX were dealt a disappointing blow by the rain-induced cancellation of the final heat, relegating him to third behind a deserving Flanagan and Dustin Traylor. Jack Beckham's l25cc Cagiva ap- peared to be the ideal set-up for the mud, as he cruised to the fastest lap times of the evening aboard the Ital ian machine to outdistance Scott Renick for the second week in a row in the 125cc Expert clash. Theveteran Expert competitor faltered only once during the proceedings when he landed slightly short on the back-section doubles. Immediate recall of similar situation in years past saved him from a tri p over the bars tha t certainly would have spoiled the rest of his night. Mike Clingon, fighlingoff the affect of a nasty ground-out in the whoops, took third place money. Jerry Farmer, riding a streak of six consecutive wins in the 250cc Expert division, made itseven in a row, a he easily outrode Chris McNeil and a surprising Dearl Croft. Croft, normally an Open Intermediate contestant, borrowed Mikey Kollman's fouryear-old YZ250 and used the wet conditions to move up five places in the overall ran kings with a steady but slow performance, which saw him maneuver around several stranded object covered wi th wet dirt. Moore scores at Boledo Scrambles By Mike Vancil HOLLISTER, CA, SEPT. 6 Still sporting the District 36 prestigious black number plate, a very hard-riding Danny Moore slipped by Robert Miller and and went on LO victory at the R&D Emerprises' promoted scrambles. At the green light it was Rod pencer on a Yamaha that grabbed the lead with Miller second and Brad pencer third. Moore was ahead of Allen Yarrow, as Spencer got by Miller for a short while before crashing. At this point both Moore and Yarrow began their move up through the ranks. Moore made his move for the lead on the inside of Miller with three laps to go as they were exiting turn one and headed into the infield portion of the kidney shaped track. Yarrow continued hi fa t, smooth and effortless riding to earn a third at the checkers. In the Amateur ranks the most he-dvily entered class was the 500cc Juniordivi ion where there was need for two heats, a semi-final and the Mid- tate Championship. The green light signal sent 15 riders into the first corner and all made it through in good shape. As the field headed for the right hand corner Jack Pack was the establ ished leader. Running second was Gary Ritdlie with teve ullinger right on Ritchie's rear wheel. As the event progressed Pack began LO stretch his lead. In three laps Sullinger figured a way around Ritchie and then set out after Pack. ~ 00 .... (1) o .. ..0 u o Mark Ashworth (319) and Robbie Taylor (19) fly over the whoops at Stepp Mill Supercross in New Mexico. While Sullinger began to whittle away at Pack's lead Melvin Elias began working his way up through the field. At about the same time that Pack fell off coming into the infield portion of the track, thereby giving the lead and the Mid-State Championship to Sullinger, it wa a determined Elias tha~ finally got around Lonnie Lacy to earn a third place trophy. In the Veteran class it was Lynn George again snatching the victory away from Gary MilC\vski. They again finished oneltwo with George collecting the win. Results PEE WEE: 1. Jeff Gabhart (Vam); 2. Ashworth burns Stepp Mill MX By Loren Williams DEMING, I .M., SEPT. 12 Yamaha riders Mark Ashworth and Robbie Taylor mixed it up hot and heavy during 250cc Pro action at Stepp Mill night motocross. The two riders battled handlebar-to-handlebar with Ashworth edging out Taylorfor the win. On a clear night, the Ashworth! Taylor dogfight came down to the wire, as they played leapfrog lap after lap. This lasted umil Taylor went a little LOO hot going into a corner and went sliding down to the ground. Taylor quickly recovered but the damage was already done. With time running out, Taylor had no chance of catching the leader Ashworth, who roosted on home for the win. Taylor fin, ished second. In the 250cc C class, Van Pitt and his Yamaha were cruising way out in front and looked to have the class win in hand. But on the final lap, on the last turn, Pitt crashed and ended up taking third behind Kirk Johnson and .Philip Rice. Cooter McClure, who won the qualifying heat race, suffered mechanical problems in the race. Results JR PEE WEE: ,. Bridgette Ables (Kaw); 2. Jonathan Sentell (Yam). PEE WEE: 1. Bo Shannon (Kaw); 2. Copeland slides to Creek County Short Track win By Scott Thompson KELLYVILLE, OK, SEPT. 6 David "Hollywood" Copeland led the entire di tance and left the battling to Brian Isbell and Tim Cartwright in the Open Expert featureat Creek County Speedway's eighth-mile oval. With three laps remaining Cartwright dove under Isbell to take over second place for the duration; Isbell held on to third place. The 250cc Amateur feature got off toa bad start as the red flag flew when Denny Sowders era hed hard on the back straight. Sowders re tarted the race, but pulled out shortly after.
