L.aRocco claims Pro Caliber MX win By Susan Willian TERRE HAUTE, IN, SEPT. 6 Round one of the Braco Great Lakes Challenge got underway at C&S Sport Concept's Pro Caliber MX track. Yamaha/Dynamic Racing/PJ l/Scott-sponsored Mike LaRocco sported his highlytuned machine to the overall wins in the 125cc Lightweight and 250/0pen Heavyweight classes by being the dominant force in four-out-of-four motos. In moto one of the Lightweight class, LaRocco snatched an early lead of( the gate to finish with a comfortable lead. Michigan's Jeff Beckington rode in second only to be unseated by Downer's Grove Yamaha's Mike Roth near the end of the moto. Beckington, on his Honda, embraced the lead only briefly in moto two as LaRocco soared by. LaRocco went down and Beckington returned out front. LaRocco styled to close in on Beckingr.on, who crashed in a turn, as LaRocco, Roth and Billy Fosnock stormed by. LaRocco took the win. LaRocco took advantage of an early lead in the first moto of the Open Heavyweight class with Fosnock and Team Green's Bobby Wagner trying to gain on the leader. Fosnock crashed, moving Wagner up one position. After regrouping, Fosnock caught up to Wagner and moved by making a midair pass. Fosnock then charged for LaRocco but time ran out as LaRocco passed the checkered first with Fosnock second an'd Wagner taking third. LaRocco dominated moto two as Roth, who finished fourth in moto one, took second followed by Wagner in third. Coming in for fourth was Fosnock, who rode most of the mbto without a seat. "When I crashed, the plastic broke and the two clamps holding the seat broke off," said Fosnock. Joshua Brown rode with no pressure rn moto one of the Junior Mini class and won. After riding in second, Jason Hatfield stalled on the white flag lap, putting Chuck Drake second as Hatfield dropped out of top contention. Scoggins Berg stormed to the front in moto two, as Brown and Drake gassed their machines. Drake pulled beside Brown but Brown held on to second. Berg fell, moving Brown into the lead. Brown and Drake then battled, but Brown held on for the second molo win, while Peter Zerial went by Drake to take second. Drake finished third. Results PEE WEE: 1. Scoggins Berg (Kawl; 2. Palenske wins FRA Funduro By Kay Hopkins RED MOUNTAIN, CA, SEPT. 7 The overall winner in the Family Racing Association Funduro was GP Racing-sponsored Grant Palenske. With an impressive score of 1.105, Palenske was two minutes ahead of UEA's Kurt Butler. In the Women's division, Dana Bell took first, with Jerilynn Poznoff second. Cone Engineering's Ryan Stenberg to'ok Mini oneloop overall honors with 2.177. Second place Mini (4.175) was Yamaha rider Kevin Cleland. The speeds were kept down for the first loop, which had a seven a.m. start. Check one was at5.8 miles. The second check was at the bottom of a sandy downhill and caught a few trials riders after a speed change to 12 mph just before the check. Check three was the check-in for the special test in the Moon Rock at Charlie's Place, and after three miles of very tight, twisting trail at 30 mph, the check-out was at 26.6. Most of the A riders zeroed this one but had to hustle to do it. The finish was an observation check at 35.2 Check six was the check-in for the first special test and took the riders up and down the canyons at the east end of the hi lis. At the end of this section was the famous Goat Trail and check seven, which ended the test. Most of the riders were two or three minutes late here except for Palenske who had the only one minute score. The Jacobsen brothers John and Scott, riding in the hotly-contested 200cc class, were just two seconds from each other at this point. They were both down only two minutes and were doing some very fast riding. Check eight was over a rise on the south boundary of the sand hills, and caught a few riders sleeping at 24 mph. Another surprise check was located just before Trona Road and the turn-around to the pits. Check 10 (30 mph) caught most riders late after being lulled by a slow speed average at the beginning and was located at the bottom of a very steep, sandy downhill. Tony Casaga and the crew of ladies at this check enjoyed watching the various downliill riding techniques. A sign at the top said, "HiHo, Hi-Ho, It's Over The Hill We Ga." Results 200 AA; 1. John E. In the 250cc class Grady took an early lead, but had to work to keep Raymond Rees behind him. In the Open class he returned to familiar ground leading the pack but not without tactful riding, closing the door as he was challenged at every turn. Phil Jones pushed the hardest as he kept constant pressure on the leader. Scott Hall Vaughn kept up the pace running right on the heels of Jones in a hard fought ride from start to finish. The thunder raised by the 500cc bikes in the Pro-Am class surely had to let the crowd in the football stadium next door know that they weren't the only game in town. Phillips kept his sponsors and fans alike on their feet as he poured it on catching the early leader David Lipscomb and finally overtaking him in turn four of the fourth lap. Lipscomb never left Grady's shadow as he tried to regain his lead. Phil Jones was constantly on the heels of both riders, but never got the chance to make a serious move as Phillips and Lipscomb both rode tight on the inside. Phil Palmer has yet to yield his throne in both 80 and 125cc classes. Closest to him this week was Tommy Hensler while Tony Rosemeyer was third. Chris Schroder of Lawrenceburg moves up another notch closer as this week he placed second in the l25cc class with Tim Perry. pulling up third. Results 80; 1. Phil Palmer (Han); 2. Arena takes Baylands win By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, SEPT. 3 The newest member of the long list of racing Arena famil y members is Matt Arena and the youngster held up the family name in fine fashion by winning both Open Pro motos at Baylands today. Theonly thing that Ilawed Arena's performance was the fact that Nationally-ranked Ricky Ryan made up from a second wave start to catch and pass the en tire Open class field on his 250cc Kawasaki. Arena, however, stayed cool and held on for the Open class win. The 250cc Junior class event was an upset event as the riders who won the motos did not figure into very high overall finish positions.
