By Angie laRocco Weaver, Davis gear up at SRAC Motocross BUCHANO ,MI, SEPT. 14 ·Close to 200 riders turned out for the second round of the Great Lake States Braco Challenge Series and in 125cc Junior action David BeckingLOn had what it took LO take home two overall wins. It was Jeff Beckington pulling out a commanding lead in the first maLO of the 125cc Junior class with Jay Wentzel and younger brother David in chase. David qui kly pushed his way into second, but was unable LO gain any more time on his older brother. JefC took the checkered followed by David and Wentzel. Wentzel claimed the holeshot honors in the final maLO with JefC Reckington putting in a lap of very hard I acing LO take over the lead by the end oC the first lap. David BeckingLOn then harged his way past Wentzel down the straightaway before the dou bles. Disaster then SHuck Cor Beckington as he slid out dropping back LO third. Quick LO recover, Jeff set outLO catch the leaders. jeff jumped past Wentzel for second, but a flat tire kept him from dosing in on David. Therefore, David's 2-1 score awarded him the first overall with Jeff second and Wentzel third. David BeckingLOn holes hot the first maLO of the 125cc B leading jon Agin and Mike Kurzeja. Beckington and Agin pulled away from the pack with BeckingLOn stretching out for the maLO win with Agin second and Kurezeja third. Second maLO action saw Agin pull out the lead, but BeckingLOn darted inLO the lead on the last corner before completing lap one. He then proceeded LO pull out a comfortable lead to claim his second overall win for the day with Agin cruising in for second and Kurzeja claiming third. In the 125cc A Lightweight racing action, Kawasaki-mounted Wentzel darted LO an early lead with John Siers and Jeff BeckingLOn chasing dose after. BeckingLOn charged LO the lead within the first lap, but slid out yielding the lead back to Wentzel. During the third lap, Mike LaRocco, who had hit the gate and fell in the fir t lap, had moved through the pack LO challenge Wentzel and Jim Randa for the lead. LaRocco out jumped Randa LO move inLO second, but Cell again leaving Wentzel and Randa back in the LOp two slots. LaRocco, quick to restart his bid for the lead, repassed Randa over a series of jumps as both riders took the white £lag and then set out to reel in Wentzel. LaRocco tried every available line LO pass the Kawasaki pilot and finally -succeeded at the last corner where he squared it off to make the maLO winning pass. In the second maLO, BeckingLOn bolted off the gate but had LaRocco in hot pursuit. On the second lap LaRocco doubled past BackingLOn for the lead, but Beckington hung in tight throughout the rest of the mota for a vl;ry close second with Randa third. By Larry Johnson LAKEWOOD, CO, SEPT. 5 Mad Max closed out their supercross series tonight with a bang by putting up a $1000 purse for the Pros, plus giving the winners of the 125 and 250cc Novice classes each complete riding gear. To top that, they're giving the series winners in both those classes their choice of new bikes [or next year. Those titles will be decided in twO weeks at the SuperCToss finale in Greeley, but Mike Weaver and Brian Davis both will get new leathers after LOnight. In the three money classes, a trio of riders received the lion's hare of the big pur e. Dave ewell rode all three classes and took home top money in the Open Pros. In moLO one, he led Brad Bolton from start-to-finish, but BaILOn stayed close. Newell grabbed the lead at the start of round two and held it into lap two when he got out of shape in the whoops. Bolton bounced past and held off Newell [or five laps, then he lost control in the same long whoop section and piled into the hay bales. Newell retook the lead and cruised LO his second win. Kip Sandell had equal success in the 250cc Pros. He LOok the holes hot in round one, but bailed later in the first lap, turning the .lead over LO Corey Cope. Newell trailed Cope [or the next few circuits before slipping past. However he crashed in the turn before the doubles, and Sandell, who was charging hard after remounting, roared past and took the win ahead o[ Newell and Tim Buchli. Sandell made no mistakes in mota two, leading all the way ahead of Buchli and ewell. The overall matched the second maLO: Sandell, Buchli and Newell. The threesome also dominated the l25cc Pros, but Buchli came out on LOp this time. An DeHoff led Newell and andell early in moto one, while Buchli was at the tail end of the pack. andelltook the lead on lap four and never trailed again, winning his third moto of the evening. Buchli, meanwhile, was muscling his way Ihrough u·afCic. making it all thnvay 10 second ahead of Newell. Buchli had to hold 0[£ Sandell all of round two on his way LO vicLOry. Sandell nearly pulled o[f a perfect night, but still went home a big winner with first and second overalls, as did Buchli. Newell added two thirds to his Open win. Results 60 NOV: 1. Since 1980, the Mountain Roadracing Association has hosted a real road race, through the streets of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. 1983 saw the Cirst year in which vintage machines played a pan on the miniature "[sle of Man" type course. The track isn't [or the safety racer, as lamp posts, curbs and other road side hazards are many, though they are padded with hay bales. The layout is 1.9 miles - 10 turns o[ twisties, ups and downs, all at6700 feel above sea level. The rules? G VRGI AMA Historic type were used. This was LO be another We t meets East meets Canada event (like Daytona), though as it turned out, the East Coasters had an event at Watkins Glen, New York, during the same weekend. Other than a few locals, plus western state trdvelers, it was a CVRG (Cali[ornia Vintage Racing Group) vs. Vintage Sprintage of B.C. Canada. The VS boys hauled in nine machines. while the CVRG "Wrecking Crew" brought 10. The fir t race was the 250/350cc Lightweight event, and its results were somewhat like Daytona's this pas 1 March. CVRG number one plate holder Mike Green LOok the overall Lightweight win, though he did have some help from his Hap Jones/CastrollShoei/WCBR Ducati 250. When the green £lag fell, Green pulled a row-three holeshot LO lead. lap one. Within moments, jeff Hecox's 10K Engineering Ducati 250 was chasing Green, while Bret Morshead, aboard a Hap Jones/Caslroll WCBR Ducati 350 overhauled Canadian Murray Neibel's 350 Manx Norton for the 350cc class lead. By lap three, Morshead pulled of[ when his ignition coil went our, leaving Neibel to take on Green for the overall lead. Fred Mark with last year's winning 250 Aermacchi was battling it up back in rieth, but later dropped LO sixth with what he calls, "a flat power band!" thus leaving him sixth overall, and fourth 25Occ, just behind john Hays' Ducati 250. Up from the battle raged, twice on the uphill cement right-hand turn, Neibel's 350 Manx would out-torque Green's high-rcvvingDucati and he'd take the lead, though both times Green retook the lead on the fast downhill [our lane ection. Torque seemed LO be the key, as Hecox's small valved Ducati even tried Green out on the same section a number o[ times, but was unable LO match his horsepower off the turn. With the white flag out, Green still led, followed by Hecox, then Neibel. Again Neibel LOok Green on the outside o[ the cement section to take the lead, but Green wasn'l going [or it. On the Casl downhill, Green pulled alongside. but in doing so, left his braking very late, so late in [act, that he locked the rear wheel as the pair entered turn eight, slamming the door on the orton! As Green drove deep, Hecox [allowed, saying later, "You really spooked that guy, almost the same as DaYLOna." Green recovered quickly, mainly by grabbing a handful of throllie to out-run both Hecox and eibel to the finish. ext up was the 500cc Premier event, basically [or machines built priortoJanuary I, 1965. Dave Walden, aboard his Triumph T100, took the early lead, while Fred Mark' B A Goldstar held down second. Within moments, MurrdY Neibel, this time on a 500 Manx Norton, charged past Mark to take second. Not LO be out done, fellow Canadian [an Watson, charged through with his Goldstar. On lap three, Green's Ducati was making IlInch 0111 oC Ihe SOOs. plowing his way up to a.fourth place battle with Mark, and losing out after doing a "Flying·W" in turn one on he last lap when the front end pushed. Walden's day was shorted-lived, as his Triumph gearbox took an early lunch break, leaving Neibel out front. This, however, was also short-lived, as '85 CVRG 350cc Champion Craig McLean powered by with his Motorcycles Undd., Matchless G50 to take 41
