I Bart Schmulbach put his Bach Shop Kawasakis under the checkers first in both the 125 and 250cc finals in the second day of racing at the CIM/C Labor Day weekend doubleheader scrambles. The track was slick and fast and Schmulbach used a tacky spot on the high side of the groove to hold off all comers in both races. The 125cc final looked like it be- . longed to Scott Huff and his Jacksonville Honda/Cycle Cr,eations Honda. Schmulbach couldn't find a way to get to the front until Huff hit a slick spot and went down on the last lap. Schmulbach took the win, to,,:ing Chad Butler, Dave Stanfield and Danny Shoufler across the finish line. The 250cc class final saw heat race winners Dana McNeil, on the OC Cycles/Daigren Bros.lBob's Autobody-sponsored Honda, and Schmulbach lined up side-by-side on the groove. The entire race was a battle for the lead and near the end it became clear that Schmulbach had the power.and ability to hold off the pa.ck. Shawn Wade slipped up through the pack after a slow start to get by McNeil for second and the quickly improving Doni Holeman took fourth behind McNeil. Les Schaclunan swapped rides with Bob Collier for the 400cc final and roared the old S&S Repair Honda 350 to a ruanway win. A tangle between Wade and Matt Collier moved Collier off the groove and back in the pack. Collier recovered to regain fourth but Wade was still in second in front of Jeff Wehrli at the checkers. Sunday's action saw Steve Hopper make the perfectly groomed scrambles track look even faster as he styled his way to the Senior class win, fighting off the best that the region had to offer. JM Davidson Engineering-sponsored Hopper and Libertyville Yamaha-sponsored Les Eslinger put on the show at the front of the pack in the final. Hopper ripped into the early lead and it took a lap for Eslinger to move up to challenge. From there to the finish it was a wheel-to-wheel battle between the pair with the decision coming when Hopper got the drive off of the last turn to win the McLean scores at Sears Point RR By Michael Green and Wheel Speclallsts Simpson Closeout! He did have some help, however, this com1ng from his Motorcycles Unlimited-sponsored Matchless G50 500cc single. McLean was followed a-cross the line by both the 350 and 250cc winners, Scott Borem and Mike Green. Twelve machines lined Sunday's grid (four to each of the three classes), with the 500s up front then the 3505, followed by the 250s. As the green fell, Fred Mork's DBD34 Racing BSA Goldstart leapt into the lead followed closely by Dan Phillips' BSA B50, McLean and finally Borem's 250cc Bultaco (running in the 350cc fourstroke class). For over two laps the field stayed bunched up. Before long, however, Borem's Bultaco was out in front and McLean was charging from fourth overall to take on the leader. Mark and Phillips battled it out for second and third in the 500cc class. The 250cccla5s leader Mike Green aboard his Dncati was in for a real battle as he worked his way past the other 350s orBret Morshead and Scott Obermuller. On lap five, Green and Jeff Hecox came across the slowing Mork, whose clutch mainshaft nut had backed off, and Dan Phillips. Hecox used the traffic to sling-shot Green for the lead, but the 500s once again turned up the horsepower as the group exited turn six, leaving the 250s. Green, however, had retaken first through turns five and six. The following lap, the 250cc duo once again caught the 5005 in turn two and as they entered three, Green took Mork on the inside, as did Hecox in turn four. The pair then chased the Phillips 500 down six and on up to seven where Hecox went wide, and Green took the inside of Phillips to lead for good. The finish must have been one of the closest ever for the 250·duo because as the pair left turn 11 for 'the final time, Green seemed as if he couldn" firW any gears, allowing Hecox to close fast. Luck was with Green as he found third and roared to the finish barely beating Hecox. Not far behind the Green/Hecox . battle was another great show, this one was contested by two 350cc Ducatis, Scott Obermuller's and Bret Morshead's.
