second 250cc moLO proved LO be his closest win as John Ryan led for six laps before Spear made a daring pass at the top of a tight uphill turn. Keith Mann's 3-3 was good for second overall and Ryan's 5-2 for third. Spear had little trouble in the Open Expert division and Doug Mitchell took his usual second overall al though it was via a 3-2 afternoon. By John Spear SOUTHWOODS, NY, AUG. 24 Herb Tompkins gnally pieced together two good motos to capture the 125cc Novice class as Southwoods MX wrapped up their 1986 season. For the first time in rive races this year, the track saw sunshine and Tompkins took advantage· of the excellent surface too post 3-2 finishes, good enough for the overall in t!).e competitive class. Rick Strid took second with a 2-4 score with Frank Manfredit, seventh 'in the first moLO, moving. up LO win the second moLO and take third overall'-Chad O'Hara won the first moLO but sl ipped LO 11th in the second for fourth overall. The points he earned moved him up to the Amateur class, along with vompkins. Dennis Tompkins, Herb's brother, made it a family day in the winner's circle as he won the 125cc Amateur class with a 1-2 day. The 125cc Expert class was the most competitive of the day and it wasn't until the very end that it was decided. Rob McCullough captured the overall with a 5-1 day but what helped him the most was Chuck Hicks' inspired riding back in fourth place in the secord maLO. Hicks was leading a tightly packed group of riders that included Len Allyn, the winner of the first moto, and Kurt Renzland, who finished second. Neither was able LO get by Allyn eventually finishing seventh and Remland eighth, giving McCullough the win. Jeff Dirago, with a 6-2 tally LOok second overa!! with Allyn third and Renzland fourth. Trickle tames Mt. Carmel MX By Dick Goodwin MT. CARMEL, UT, AUG. 24 Chris Trickle rode a wellprepped Honda at top speeds all day long to put away his competition in the large 125ccNovice class at Mt. Carmel MX. Trickle nailed moto one's holeshot, just ahead of Jeff Murphy and Robert Figgins. As the first lap unfolded, David Griffith, Craig Cherry and Eric Griffith closed up to battle with Trickle and Murphy for the lead. Cherry proceeded to wash out in the back section hairpin turn, while Eric GriHith was fighting past Murphy LO challenge his brother David for the second spot. Trickle romped home unchallenged for the vicLOry. The Griffith brothers, David and Eric, finished second and third. Jeff Murphy and Larry Smith grabbed the fourth and fifth slots. The second moLO began just like the first, with another Trickle holeshot, followed by Murphy and Figgins. Trickle eased on home for an e.asy win and a perfect I-I day. A determined Murphy finished a solid second, ahead of Cherry and Smith. The overall results had Trickle the winner; Murphy in second,' Smith third, Eric Griffith fourth, and brother David fifth. . Veterans were also in action, and the Vets Intermediate division was led by double moto winner Jim Barn. son. Bill Bearup grabbed the holeshot in moto one but Gil Boers and Barnson were camped on his rear fender. Team Barnm's Barnson fought past ARA-sponsored Boers during lap one, then went on LO challenge Bandit Racing's Bearup for the lead. A spirited fight ensued for the next couple of laps, until Barnson forced his way past into first place. He kept the pressure on and crossed the checkers by a comfortable margin over Bearup. Bearup again led the pack at the start of the second moLO, followed closely by Barnson and Boers. This time, Barnson made his move early, as he Hashed past Bearup on the fi~st lap. Although Barnson couldn' t shake Bearup, he kept the Yamaha pilot at bay for the remainder of the race.
