The battle continued in the 125cc C class between Yamaha-mounted Billy Penick and Kawasaki rider Bryan Jones. With only one point separating the two riders in the CRA points race, each knew they had to win. In the first moto, Penick grabbed the lead in turn one, followed by Jones and Joe Maretich and the three held their positions for the five lap moto. In the second moto, Penick grabbed the lead through turn one, followed again by Jones and Maretich. But Jones was not about to allow Penick another win and took the lead on the first lap and held on for the win. Penick had to settle for second bu t the battle will continue. Yf;>u Saw it in Slack attacks at Carlsbad GP By David Procida CARLSBAD, CA, AUG. 3 Carlsbad Raceway hosted the seyenth Doublecross race of the season, using a large portion of the Superbikers course plus a new section of the track that fe-attIres a 50-yard straightaway laced with rocks, followed by a tight and lwisty area through the woods. When the Vet and Senior class riders lOok to the track it was Yamaha -YZ250-mounted Barry Porter closely followed by the Open class Hondas of Rick Lee and' Jim Hawkins. On lap four Lee slipped by Porter and held him of[ to the finish. 250cc Vet Amateur competitor Lewis Wright and his KTM led Dean Dlouhy and Chuck Duran until a brake problem dropped him off the pace to third. Dloughy took th'eAmaleur win with Duran second. Riverside Kawasaki's David Calloway went wire-to-wire out front for the 250cc Vet Novice win with Bob Sullivan and Wes Lukina rounding out the top three spots. l25cc Vet Novice Dale Pickard led a large class of riders until his Yamaha quiton the drag strip. Hefired it up a few minutes later and screamed his way back 1.0 third behind winner Andre Stowe and runner-up Ed Moore. In Vet Open Beginner action it came down to the closing laps to decide a winner and in the end Dick Cressy led Scott Crawford and Paul Lemire across the finish line. The 250cc Vet Beginner win went to Franko Surrivge. Expert Jerry Black on the SCRsponsored Suzuki pulled the holeshot at the start of the 250cc class with Chris Taylor and Mark Johnson in tow.
