Shetler. who will be 40 years old in October. completed the triathlon in 11 hours and 57 minutes. BYWlPlIWfliLfY The September 8-13 International Six Days Enduro in Italy saw the Italian Trophy team gamer top honors. Sweden. Czechoslovakia. West Germany and East Germany rounded out the top five in World Trophy competition with the American team finishing sixth. Fritz Kadlec (Hus) was the top American in the event. finishing seventh in the 500cc clasa. Tadahiko Taira (Yam) won the 500cc Pro race at the Japanese Grand Prix, a non-championship event, which took place in Suzuka, Japan, on Sunday, September 14. Wayne Gardner (Hon) finished second. Freddie Spencer flew to Japan for the 'rat;:e, but according to his secretary "did not race." Spencer took part in practice on Thursday but said his wrist, which was operated on earlier this year, still bothered him. Benelli/Moto Guzzi North America. the U.S. importer and distributor of Benelli and Moto Guzzi motorcycles. has received notification from the California Air Rasources Board that executive orders have been signed allowing the sale of Moto Guzzis in California. Moto Guzzis have not been available in California since 1984 when CARB instituted regulatio,ns requiring all Class III motorcycles (over 28Occ) to comply with an evaporative emisaions regulation. An emisaions control system wes developed for Moto Guzzi by California dealer Sonny Angel and the system was then refined and modified in Italy and submitted to the CAR B for approval. The control system is in !tit form and is installed by the dealer prior to sale. Benelli/ Moto Guzzi North America expects distribution of California legal Moto Guzzis to begin within 60 days. A group of speedway sidecar racers from New Zealand will squirt dirt at Gardena, California's Ascot Park Raceway during the Satuday night, September 30. Doug Toland and Dave Sadowski rode the Team Hammer Suzuki GSXR 1100 to victory in the September 13 Roebling Road Six-Hour, another round of the WERA/EBC series, in Savannah, Georgia. Six laps down in second place was the Team Solmax Yamaha FZ750 which was ridden by Terry Bailey and Dwayne Palmer. Team Hammer logged 258 laps. The funeral for Bob Pearson. The Florida Department of Transportation has informed the AMA that high-occupany vehicle lanes (HOVs) there should be open to motorcycle traffic this month. News of the decision came in a written response to an earlier request bythe AMA Government Relations Department for Florida to abide by the Surface Transportation Assistance Act (STAA) of 1982. The STAA instructed states to allow motorcycles use of HOVs ,in the absence of factors compromising safety. Florida Department of Transportation official William F. Ventry acceded that Florida should open to the lanes to be in compliance with the STAA. He wrote. "This change will require a revision to existing traffic regulations . . . and notification of en· forcement agencies and local govemmententitiesaffected. Flor/' ida statutes require at least a 14day notice to local governments. " He added that the notification procesa would begin within a few days of his August 25 communication. Newly·crowned 250cc MX World Champion Jacky Vimond was injured on Wednesday, .September 10, at a press conferenlIe/victory party in France. Vimond was being lowered to a stage from the ceiling on his Ya~aha when the wires supporting the Frenchman and his bike snapped. Vimond fell approximately 28 feet and broke a vertebre, a shoulder and some ribs. It was announced at the conference that Vimond will contest the 500cc GPs in Europe next year. Kawasaki's government relations man Jeff Shetler recently compet- Cliff Carr, one of the organizers of the September 20 La Carrera race in Mexico, tells us that post-entries will be accepted the morning of the race. The event will start in San Felipe and take contestants to Ensenada. Returning to take part in his second La Carrera is two-time Grand National Champion Gary Nixon. Carr reports a rather secretive entry has been received from what he feels is the HarleyDavidson factory. The Rennsport Moto Guzzi which won this year's Battle of The Twins Heavyweight class at both Daytona and Laguna Seca is entered in the race. The bike will be ridden by Geoff McCarthy, who recently joined the staff at Santa Barbara, California's Rennsport Moto Guzzi/BMW dealership as service technician. Jac· obs. Kenyon and Eckhardt. Canadian Ross Copas logged 10,300 miles on his BMW KIOO to win the Iron Butt Rally. Barry Norman of Ohio was second aboard a Yamaha Venture, and there was a tie for third between Fran Crane (BMW) and Gary Moore (Hon). The run saw entrants circumvent the contiguous 48 states, starting and finishing in Momgomeryville, Pennsylvania. The run ended on Saturday, September 6. The succassful endurance road race. team you knew as Team Po Folks is now Team RC Cola. With Bill Trowbridge as team captain and Dale Burroughs and Dean Swims handling the riding chores. Team RC Cola will compete in the October 1B-19 Paul Revere 260 at Daytona International Speedway with backing from the soft drink manufacturer. PROMOTED: Marge Lakin to the position of operations administration manager for Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A.~ Lakin will be responsible.for managing Kawasaki's computer links to its dealer network. The second round of the CMC Trans-Cal MX Series was held at Sandhill Ranch in Brentwood. Cali· fornia. on September 13-14 and the 125cc Pro class win went to Ricky Ryan (Kaw) over Tyson Vohland (KllW). Top honors in the 250cc Pro class were earned by Jeff Stanton (Vam) with Bader Manneh (Vam) finishing second overall. Willy Simons (Hon) was the overall winner of the 600cc Pro division with Stanton second. Gary Semics (Vam) and Billy Grossi (Vam) finished 1-2 in the Vet Pros. while Paul Winn (Vam) was the winner of the 80cc Expert class. An AMA appeals board, consisting of Earl Widman, Dwaine Williams and Ben Raw Is, met on September II in Daytona Beach, Florida, and restored· road racer Jimmy Adamo's Battle of The Twins win from the final road race round of the AMA/Camel Pro Series at Road Atlanta on August 10. Adamo was disqualified after winning the event when it was discovered that his Team Leoni Ducati was overbored. At the appeals board meeting, the committee said, "The appeals committee feels there is sufficient ambiguity in the AMA BoTT rules - specifically Rule No.2 for Modified Production and Rule No.5 for Grand Prix - that the interpretation· of those rules is open to question. Considering the circumstances and the extent of the infraction, we feel that James Adamo's appeal should be upheld and his win at Road Atlanta restored. We further recommend that BaTT rules be clarified for 1987 to allow for reasonable overbore in the Grand Prix class, as was the original intent of the BaTT racing advisory committee."
