By Susan Willian HORTONVILLE, IN, AUG. 31 A redesigned course and added stairstep section greeted riders at the improved facility at Knobby Hills MX. Downers Grove Yamaha/Answer/ Bill's Racing-backed Mike Roth earned the overall win i the 250cc A class and finished second in the 125cc A ranks. Tim Ramsey took the lead in moto one of the 250cc A class and be was chased around the course by Danny Umbarger and the Smith brothers, Mark and Doug. The whoop section saw Umbarger grab the lead from Ramsey. Ramsey got the lead back with Umbarger second and Doug Smith third. Umbarger tried to repass Ramsey through the whoops andover tbe table top but Ramsey motored on in the number one spot. The halfway mark saw Umbarger the leader with Smith second after Ramsey crashed in the back section of the track. Umbarger started pulling away from Smith as Roth, on his Bill Baird-tuned machine, moved through the pack to pass Smith and take over second. Roth then closed in on Umbarger and Rqth took the lead through the camelba k and Smith also passed Umbarger. Roth took the win followed by Smith and Umbarger. Umbarger shot off the gate in moto two, followed by Ramsey, Roth and Doug Smith. By the second lap of action, Ramsey was a DNF with a flat. Roth moved into second and then took advan tage of a move inside of a turn to take the lead from Umbarger. Wageman takes Bakersfield SX By David Piker BAKERSFIELD, CA, AUG. 23 Russ Wageman took his 250cc Yamaha to the line at the Bakersfield Fairgrounds tonight for the final supercross of of the '86 season and ripped off two easy wins in the combined 125/250cc Pro class. Q.) 0. Russ Wageman won the combined Pro class at Bakersfield, California. While first was never in doubt, the for second was fierce indeed bUl after all the bar-banging, yelling and block passing was over John Zahrt's 2-3 score was good enough to Rut his Suzuki in second with Jim Perrys 4-2 earning third. Two of the best races of the night involved a couple of locals, Todd and Brian Sweaney. Todd, a 125cc Intermediate, won his (irst moto followed closely by Mike Dunlap on a Honda. As the gate fell for the start of the econd moto Todd again stormed to the front and began to pull away. It looked like an easy one for him, but Dunlap turned up the power on his Honda and began to reel him in. He rode like a machine, cutting away at the leader's cushion until with just under a lap anda haii to go he caught him and dove underneath the yellow bike for the lead. His lead was short lived, however, as Todd charged past on the next straight. They took the white £lag inches apart with Sweaney leading. Dunlap again jammed his bike into the lead and all he had to do was keep it there over the rockers and around the final turn, but the Suzuki soaked up the rough a little better than the Honda and Todd had about a half bike lead going inLO the final turn. They were out of sight behind the finish line jump for a second but when they came over it, Todd had pulled off his second win of the night. Brian Sweaney, a 250cc Intermediate won his first moto with Honda riders Darin Layton and Rick Sazama and uzuki rider lack "Attack" Bennet finishing in that order. [n lhe econd moto the twO Suzuki rider broke to the front and had their own race, leaving the others way behind. They were never more lhan a bike or lWO apart as lhey diced back and forth for the lead. The same whooped out straight that figured in the l25ccrace would also be a deciding factor in this one as the hump at the end of it kicked up the rear of Bennet's bike and caused him to crash hard. Sweaney ran over him and stalled his bike. weaney fiTed ·his bike and took off without losinga position, but Bennet wasn't so lucky. By the time he got underway he was between the Yamaha of Clay Perlman and Layton's Honda. Having taken the while flag as soon as he took off, he only had one lap lO re-pass the Yamaha for second place and second overall. He tried to push his way past on the same section he'd crashed on the lap before but it didn't work. The Yamaha rider moved left and forced him into the rough area at the edge of the track. Q.)
