Hawkins hacks Turkey Creek Enduro By Phyllis Apone RAIFORD, FL, AUG. 31 Husqvarna-mounted Randy Hawkins beat out KTM rider Mitch McRee by a mere two points, 13 to 15, to win the Turkey Creek Enduro. The win, the second straight by Hawkins in the 1986-87 SE&TRA Series, came the day before he was to jet to Italy for the ISDE. The event was put together by the River City Dirt Riders and the Polish Path Finders, the former being a new club organized in 1985. The Polish Path Finders were founded in 1975 and have hosted eight enduros in Raiford, the last one prior to today's run took place in 1983. H&H-sponsored McRae had a terrific day. [f anyone looked like they could handle the swamplike fields, it was McRee. He didn'L even look muddy. When asked if he had any problems, he said, "I only wished that Randy had left for Italy one day sooner.'· It had rained the previous week in the north Florida community, making the ARRA look like the Everglades in south Florida. Riders had to "swim" through many thigh-high waterholes. Over 100 riders out of258 dropped out the first check. Riding in the Open A class, the legendary Barry Higgins, (who turned the big ??? this past birthday week) enjoyed the mud-bogging more than the younger crowd. At one section Higgins bent the front disc on his KTM and had to get to the first reset for a quick change, where his pit crew was standing ready for any and all assistance. It was a close run for Barry who dropped 21 points beh ind class winner Harry McCarson's 19 points and Mark Eaddy's 20 points. Darrell Cox won the Open B class over second place Husky-mounted Dale Stegall. Stegall said that he was just having a slow day, but25 points was not slow compared to the other 74 riders who came in the top five in each class. Darrell; from South Carolina, said that he came over the night before and camped out with some friends, including Carol Kirby, who . was awaiting the delivery of his Just purchased KTM 350 Enduro. However, this was not the race for breaking it in. Darrell, riding a Husqvarna, had a fast ride, dropping only 22 points, which also placed him II th overall. Florida's Carlos Martinez said that he had a really good ride through the tight woods despite the water and mud. Martinez, walking away with the fourth place trophy in the 250cc C class, said that Daryl Graig, who won the class, had been teaching him to ride in the mud and Floritla sand. This co-sanctioned race had 172 SE &TRA members compete compared to the 122 FTR members, despite the long haul for many. But both clubs left stranded riders everywhere on this course. The Super Senior class riders, from winner Joe Haley to fifth place finisher Don Lilley, will have to prove that you don't get older, you get beller, as no Super Senior rider finished the enduro. Hayden scores at ,"urray ST By Karen Lewis MURRAY, KY, AUG. 30 Nick Hayden took home the gold in Automatic short track racing in Murray today. J on Camp led the Automatic main after one lap with Hayden in hot pursuit. Hayden took the lead on the next circuit and kept it wired en route to winning the biggest class of the night. Camp. came in ·a close second and Joshua Knott held offJenny Hayden for third. Beau Braswell and Jason Goodwin carded fifth and sixth place finishes. Tommy Hayden led the 80ccmachines with Kevin Hill, Michael Dowdy and Robbie Grief running three abreast. Hayden bobbled and Winner Doug Polen (296) leads runner-up Dan Chivington (53) during A Production action at Blackhawk Farms Raceway. • found himself in fourth on the next lap. On lap three Grief passed Dowdy and set out to catch the leader Hill, Hill stayed on the groove to take the win over a fast-closing Grief while Dowdy held third over Hayden. Kevin Woodruff led the 200s off the line with Monte Starke and Jackie Brown in tow. Woodruff couldn't shake Starks and at the halfway point yielded the lead. Starks ran the remaining laps in the front with Woodruff holding second over Brown. Scott Lamb wired the 125cc start with Eddie Reagor tied to his rear fender. Reagor tried his best to find a line underneath, but had to settle for second. Bobby Dowell put his Sills Cycle Yamaha into third with Tommy Hayden fourth. BELOIT, IL, AUG. 31 Most of the racers in WERA's North Centra] Region had never competed against Texan Doug Polen. After the weekend at Blackhawk Farms Raceway most of them probably hope they won't have to run against him again for a long time. Polen made his first trip up north and he left a great impression on the riders of that region. Polen rode his pair of Suzuki GSXRs and his Honda 500 Interceptor, backed by Denton Motorcycle Center, Michelin and RSC Performance, to three victories worth a total of $2700. Polen's day began with the B Production class where he won Saturday's heat race and sat on the pole for the final. In the middle of the front row was Dan Chivington on another GSXR750, and on the outside of row one was John Eiden berger on a Yamaha FZ750. Eidenberger had the distinction of holding the track record at Blackhawk, having set the record of 1;13.86 one week earlier at an AMA road race aboard a Yamaha FZ750. Polen jumped out to the early lead with Eidenberger and Chivington in tow. Chivington got by Eidenberger on lap two and by midway in the race Polen had a seven second lead on Chivington. Chivington increased his lead on Eidenberger and the only close race was the one for fourth between Ed Key, Fritz Kling, Dave Schmidt and Kim Papierniak. Polen crossed the finish line eight seconds ahead of Chivington, Eidenberger was third and Dave Schmidt woo the battle for fourth. Chuck Magnusson surprised a lot of folks by winning the A Production heat race by two seconds over Polen and Chivington. Polen didn't seem worried and even predicted that Magnusson would be no problem on Sunday. Polen proved to bea prophet as he won the race easily over Chivington and Magnusson and set a new track record of I: 13.70 in the process. Polen completed his profitable day by shaking off early challenges from Kurt Hall and Scott Zampach to win the Hori& 500 Interceptor race and the $700 that goes with it.
