AUG. 23 The National Championship Qualifiers made their first ever appearance at Speedway USA on the track's One year anniversary and a huge crowd gathered at the facility to watch a number of riders compete there for the very first time. Even though a number of stars from southern and northern California were making their first laps on the track the win went toa Speedway USA regular. Mike Faria swept the show and closed OUI the greatest-ever performance:turned in during the Qualifiers. Faria made a toral of 30sLaTts in the Qualifiers and he defied anyone's expectations by raking 28 wins and two second place finishes. He scored a toral of 124 of a possible 126 points in the six nights of action spread over eight days. The Speedway USA round of the Qualifiers was by far the most competitive as Faria (ShoeilTsubaki/ Oilzall/George Wenn/Cody Products Jawa) was undefeated after thequalifying heats, but so were john Sandona, Gary Hicks, Bobby Schwartz and John Cook. . To say the least the action was furious on the night. Lucero can certainly testify to that. In his second heat he was outside Jeff johnson and John Sandona as they entered turn three on lap one. Sandona hit johnson and sent johnson into Lucero triggering a nasty crash thaI saw Lucero report to the hospital with a back injury. Eddie Ingles failed to post a win in his qualifiers but he made the main by outdistancing Cook and Schwartz in the first semi. Hicks held back Lucero 10 take semi number two while Sandona won from Pfetzing in the third semi. As usual Faria won the last semi over Ronnie Correy and Tuff McBride and that ended McBride's hopes of being in his first National. The Consoaltion was a real crowd pleasing race as the lead chan~ed hands three times and the winner was perennial Speedway US favorite Ronnie Correy. Correy ended.4P winning . by a wide margin over Cook, who narrowly won a fantastic battle with Chrisco. The main was Faria again. He came from the pole and rode away for his fourth perfect score of the series. Ga.ry Hicks was in second, but hehad Sandona and lngls breathing down his heck. Sandona finally moved inside Hicks on lap threeandjustahout the same time Ingels blasted into the turn three crash wall. The red came out and the victory was the property of Faria. Ingels hopped over the crash wall immediately after his crash and barely made it back to his pit. He had what was first reported as a serious compound fracture of his leg and a gash on his eye. Fortunately later reports confirmed that he had not suffered a broken leg but only a painful, serious gash. We will be ready for his first National since 1980. Results MAIN: 1. Mike Faria (Jaw); 2. John Sandona (Was); 3. Gary Hicks (Was). CONSOL: 1. Ronnie Correy (Wes); 2. John Cook (Was); 3. Keith Chrisco (Wes).
