Costa Mesa. California Scratch main win er Rob Pfetzing leads Gary Hicks and Walt Farnum; Hicks was second in the Handicap race. Tony Spear (87) defe!lted Chris Henrich and Dan Berg in the 250cc Pro class at Glen Helen Raceway's Cal Classic MX Series event. British League rider John Cook traveled to southern California to attempt to qualify for the National championship; here he styles at Costa Mesa. over Ingles, Scotty Brown and OtL. The second semi saw southern California regulars Pfetzing and Brad Oxley hold back British Leaguers John Cook and Bobby chwanz. Ban Bast took the third semi from Steve Lucero and of course it was Faria taking the final one from Gary Hicks and Tuff McBride. McBride made it to the semis after surviving a five-rider runoff that was marred by a serious crash involving Mark Dwyer and Jeff Jones. Dwyer suffered a back injury while Jones suffered an apparent broken leg. The Consolation was a wild affair that first saw Ingels grab the lead over Lucero, Oxley and Hicks_ Oxley got a wheel inside Lucero but couldn't get back. Ingels wheeliedat the end of lap one, but he quickly got his Jront wheel back down and he and Lucero hit turn one on lap two wide open. Lucero took Ingels wide with a shot as they entered the corner and that allowed both Oxley and Hicks underneath and into the first two positions. Oxley led the rest of the way over Hicks, Lucero and Ingels, Pfetzing came off the pole in the main with Faria out of two. Pfetzing (ValvolinelO'Nea1l2 Kin Chu/Team Swolen/Kal-Gard· Weslake) came off the line and instead of heading directIy into turn one he madea small right hand maneuver that slowed down Faria and the remainder of the pack just enough 10 let him get a lead. Faria settled into' the number two spot just ahead of Sandona and Bast. Faria tried to find the drive all the way but while he was hoping to get Pfetzing, andona was working on him and almost gOt by a they came off the second turn on the last lap. • Faria, then went about the business of holding back Sandona while Pfetzing recorded a one length win. Gary Hicks Mabery wins Cal Classic Series MX By Terry Whytal SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 24 Yamaha rider Jeff Mabery came from behind in the 125cc Pro race to take both moto wins at round seven of the Yamaha California Classic at Glen Helen Raceway. Suzuki pilot John Flores chased Maher\' 10 the firsl molO checkers of the SMX-sanctioned event but a second molO sixth-place finish dropped Flores to third overall behind Yamaha-mounted Chris Taylor, who Posted a 4-3 score for the runner-up overall position. Tim Cauby led a three-rider battle for supremacy in the Open Pro class. Cauby led early in each molO as Ian Fitz-Gibbon and Tony Spear battled for the number tWO slot. Fill-Gibbon proved faster of the twO to earn the second-place purse money behind Cauby's consistent I-I £inish. All three racers were Yamaha-mounted. Spear returned 10 form in the 250cc Pro class riding his more familiar Suzuki RM. Spear used a good start and strong ride through lapped riders 10 reach the checkers first in round one, then followed with a second in round two to clinch the day's big money. Chris Heinrich rode his Honda to the runner-up spot with Dan Berg taking third on a Suzuki. Lance Barnett was unbeatable in the 250cc Intermediate race. Barnett powered his Kawasaki 10 the front in each moto and held on to take the checkers first and the overall win. Yamaha pilot Jimmy Lewis kept his series points totals looking good as he placed second overall ahead of Yamaha-mounted Kenny Maddux. Former Yamaha factory star Rex taten returned to action in the Vet Expen class. Staten and former National champ Gary Jones both rode - Open Yamahas in a classic duel that kept the outcome in doubt until the final lap of each molO. Tyler doubles at AlbanyMX By Clay Ught ALBANY, OR, AUG. 17 Washington's Scott Tyler topped two classes in the Pro ranks at the final round of the CMC/Skoal Bandit/Suzukisponsored Pac-West MX Series at Albany Speedway. Yamaha-mounted Tyler went I-I in the 250cc and Open Pro classes. AnotheT of the many WashinglOn riders on hand, John Sowards soared to a win in the 125cc Pro class after posting sensational 3-] rides aboard a Honda. In the fast paced 80cc Expert/Intermediate mOlOS it was Team Green's Jay Daily taking the win. It was no contest as Daily was the only Expert in the field and easily breezed 10 double moto wins over Intermediate class winner Matt Worbes. Worbes used 12 rides to take lOp brass in the Intermediate portion ahead of Adam West, winner of moto two. Travis Markell took second overall with 2-3 rides while third fell to West via 5-1 finishes. Twenty contestants lined up for the first l25cc B molO which saw Oregon's Dan Gregory take the lead oV'er WashinglOn's Rick Hansen and £\y to the win over Hansen, Scott Hickson, Tony Fox and David Browning. MOIO two saw Fox fast enough to grab the win. but a dismal first moto fourth for Fox pUt Gregory into the winner's circle with 1-2 rides. Fox's 4-1 nenedsecond and Hansen a 2-5 third. The largest Pro class at the PacWest final was the 125cc Pro division. Grayson Hart and fellow Oregonian Kenny Olsen had a duel for the lead that wasn't for the faint of heart, but JUSt as things were shaping up, Olsen suffered mechanical woes and dropped back, allowing Hart to breeze to the moto win. Second in the moto went 10 JeH Sowards, followed by brother John. Californian Willy Musgrave and Washington speedsters Oren Bray and Marvin Waldo. MOLO two had Hart and the Sowards brothers dueling for positions, but Scon Steffy came through traffic and settled into second. SteHy was unable 10 catch John Sowards and was doomed for the number twO spot for the duration. Honda-mounted John owards cashed in for the overall win after taking moLO two by storm, followed by Steffy, Hart, JeH Sowards,
