Pat Humphries lay unconscious on the side of the road near Spartansburg, South Carolina, after being hit by a car while riding his motorcycle. As he came to, he saw a woman bent over trying to offer him aid and, behind her, the Lone Ranger (complete with maskl holding a flashlight. Clayton Moore. the original Lone Ranger. was on his way to perform in a local benefit when he and his wife. a registered nurse. came upon the accident. "I was in too much pain to care much about who was helping me." Humphries said. "1 didn't know who it was at first, but Mrs. Moore said it was the Lone Ranger and I could see this guy in a blue suit with the flashlight." Later. after receiving treatment at a medical center, Humphries received a signed photo of the masked man on his horse, Silver. "You're a very lucky man." it read. "Always wear your helmet, pard. Clayton Moore - The Lone Ranger." The riders played bingo, talked and laughed with the children and did a fine job of lifting the spirits of the young patients, most of whom are suffering from a terminal form of cancer. Bobby Pearson, tuner for MXer Billy Lit s. was killed in an automobile accident in Italy on Wednesday;September 2. Liles, who was in Europe to compete in several races and discuss a possible contract with Kawasaki Italy for the '87 GP MX season, survived the accident. a did ISDE rider jeff Miller. Dr. Denni Metzger, Liles' tending physician and clo e per onal friend, flew to Italy the day following the accident to arrange shipment of Pearson's body to the U.S. and to tend to Liles. "Billy was battered in the accident and suffered whiplash and a laceration of the head," said Dr. Metzger. Pearson had worked at the Mableton, Georgia, Kawasaki and Suzuki dealership owned by Frank john on for three years. john on said, "Bobby was one of the nicest people I have ever worked with. He and Billy hit it off real well and we're all deeply saddened by the loss." The AMA has selected the three riders who will represent the United States at the 1986 Motocross des Nations. The riders are David Bailey, Rick Johnson and Johnny O'Mara. This year's event will be held on September 21, at Maggiora, Italy. The format, which was debuted last year, calls for National teams consisting of three riders, with one rider from each team competing on 125, 250 or 500cc machines. For the U.S. squad, Bailey will ride the 500, Johnson will ride the 250 and O'Mara will be aboard the 125. The United States has won this competition every year since 1981 and hopes to repeat again this year so that they can defend their titles on home ground when the event moves to Unadilla Valley Sports Center in New Berlin, New York, in 1987. To raise funds to cover the expense of sending our team overseas, the AMA has been seIling commemorative T-shirts, as they have done for the past several years. Longtime Cycle News readers might recall a 1972 feature that looked at a two-stroke dirt bike built - engine and all - by a Californian named Frank Wheeler. That Californian is now living in Australia and has organized an off-road/ trail ride package tour of the Australian outback that he describes as a "seven-day motorcycle safari of the best Australia has to offer." The package price of $2595 covers bike rental. accommodations, food, lodging and support - everything but transportation to Australia and riding gear.
