California Racing Club was back in its regular racing program after the IRC Tire Series. Today's MX at Sunrise Cycle Park had a surprisingly good turnout despite being right in the' middle of a three-day holiday weekend. Duane "Banzai" Benner lived up to his nickname by nailing the high berm in turn one in the first 125cc Intermediate class moto and riding it like a rocket to a healthy lead by turn two. His moment of glory lasted a little over a lap. Several falls and an ailing bike put him out for the day. Troy Welty took over the lead then crashed out also. leaving the lead and the mota LO Nicky Pounds with rider Paul Vlach in second. Vlach pulled the holes hot in maLO two and was never headed as he took the maLO and the overall win. Craig Davis was behind him for a lap but leaped into the camelback sidewavs and wem down. giving second [0 Pounds. Pounds set out after Vlach who proved LO be unc;itch",ble. Pounds took second avera II. Pounds came back ill the 250cc Intermediate class and took the first maLO win after early leader Brian Sweany tried going faster sideways than forward and went down. Pounds fell LO last in maLO two while trying to move into the lead. Murray Shackle- ford quickly moved into the gap and went on for the mota win. With his first maLO third, that gave Shackleford the overall. We haven't seen Mike Kiedrowski for many months, but he made his presence known in a big way today. Angeles Precision Grinding, PJ-I, Answer, Kawasaki Team Green-sponsored Kiedrowski took the holeshot in maLO one of the I 25cc Pro class with Bretleaf Tuning/Martini Racingsponsored Ty Davis very close behind. Davis took the lead in some t"ugh Jumps but KIedrowski stayed within inches for two laps. In lap four, the two swapped the lead several times with Kiedrowski taking the lead for good on a tight inside pass. Kiedrowski took the maLO with Davis about 10 seconds back in second. Davis grabbed the holeshot in maLO two with Kiedrowski gelling a bad start back in seventh. Kiedrow ki stampeded up LO second by lap two and camped on Davis' rear fender. The pace was furious but Davis would not yield, and the two flew around the course for eight more laps, never more than one bi ke length a part. That went on right to the checkered with Davis picking up allthe marbles. Results PEE WEE CLASS c: ,. Kyle Shimek (Vam); 2. Josh Doherty (Yam). PEE WEE CLASS B: ,. Matthew Pickering (Yam); 2. I Kenny Olsen and Jere Meeker were the Pro class winners at the Ulven Forging invitational Super<:ross at Albany Speedway during Motocross Northwest-sancrjoned racing. Olsen used a I-I LO take top I 25cc Pro money while Meeker earned his cash by nabbing both 250cc Pro contests on Labor Day. Honda rider David Eakin blew the lid off the 30-40 Pro class and breezed LO I-I winsinthecla s.Deanjohnson, on a Honda. and Kawasaki-mounted Gary Beaver were Eakin's ciosest competition in maLO one with Beaver getting the nod for second, followed by johnson and Ken Kulleson. MaLO twO also saw Eakin in the lead and the Portland ATV-supported rIder was totally unstoppable on his Honda. Beaver's second maLO charge came to an abrupt halt when the Kawasaki speedster DNF which put Californian Johnson into the number twO slot (3-2) over Kulleson (4-3). It wa appropriate that Kawasaki rider Danny Ulven would turn the tables on the competirion in the 80cc B class since his parents were the sponsors of the day's race program. In mOloone. however, it was Yamahamounted Travis Markell pUlling the stOps to Ulven. but in the second round it was Ulven gelling revenge with a moLO win as well as the overall. Markell, and Kawasaki rider jason McCormick ate Ulven's roo tinmoLO two with Markell taking second in the overall standings with 1-2 rides behind Ulven's2-1 punch. Third went LO McCormick with Marlin Hansen and Rich Browning fourth and fifth, respectively. In the samc race, Team Green's jeff Daily won the 80cc Expert portIOn. Kawa aki rider Nick Blasdell pulled out a major upsct in the 250cc B ranks after beating White Brothers rider Tony Graves. MaLO one saw Hondamounted Graves takc a win over Blasdell. Yamaha-mounted jeff Miles and Honda rider Tony Cabodi. In the second maLO it was Blasdell coming out on tOP of the shootollt for the overall via 2-1 rides while Graves took an unfamiliar second ahead of Miles, and Larry Hansen. The 12Scc Pro class saw Olsen shoot into the lead at the drop of the gate in the first mota with Gary "Bad Boy" Beyer and Keith Foidel in the top three. Beyer and Olsen had a duel for the lead that fizzled, which clearly gave the nod to Olsen with Beyer second and Foidel taking'third on his Honda ahead of Kawasaki rider Larry Brumwell and Yamaha rider Dave Livingston. In moto two it was Olsen again drilling the holeshot and he held off vain advances from Beyer to top the second contest. Olsen's impressive II rides beat last season's dominalOr in the class, Beyer. Beyer took second and Foidel third. Niemi nabs Millville MX By Rolfe Otterness MILLVILLE, MN, AUG. 24 John Niemi aced both motos of the 250cc Expert class at the latest Hi Winders Motocross. Niemi batded with Rich Pearson in both motos, but won when Pearson was sidelined with jgnition problems. Other class winners included Robbie Engstrom in the Mini 14-ISclass, David Taitin 125ccExpert and Jeff Sorensen in the Open Expert dlvlslon. This was the first race since the National MX and hordes of riders attended. Traction was plentiful on the well-prepared Spring Creek course until late in the day when light rain fell. Total rider count was tallied at 370. . Niemi led the packof2S0cc Experts through the first turn with his KX, but Pearson grabbed the lead at the bonom of the downhill. Pearson led for several laps, but his bike died in the middlc of the sand wash when his ignition's pickup coil broke. Niemi inherited the lead and went on lO win ea.sily. Mike Graif grabbed second wnh DaVid Henry closing in third. Tim Bernloehr was fourth afrer holding off Henry for a long time. Pearson superglued his ignition back and holeshot the second malO. Niemi and Graif sLUck close for a while with Niemj leadjng briefly. Pearson regai!!ed the lead a!!d began lO pull away shghtly when hiS mount began to spuuer badly and he fell back to DNF onceagajn.
