remounted in second and closed on Taylor. Atwell made his move on Taylor in the whoop section and regained lhe top position; he took lhe moLO and lheoverall win. Taylor finished second, and RobeTl Buntin claimed third. Billy Fosno.ck dominated the Expert class by winning both moLOS and taking lhe overall. Fosnock was chased in moLO one by Danny Umbarger. Umbarger returned in moto two LO grab an early lead. Fosnock closed in on lhe front runner and eventually snagged lhe lead when Umbarger almost 10 t it. Greg Derickson styled his machine LO a pair of moLO wins and the overall in the Senior Mini class. Sam Woosley rode LO second in moLO one but had a DNF in moLO two, after mechanical problems. Faria stars at 'MSSpdwy By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 27 Mike Faria scored the elusive double by winning both the Scratch and Handicap main event on Cycle News Class 4 Night at John Ladouceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway. A large crowd jammed the facility [or the evening's action and they were more than pleased with Shoei/TsubakiiOi IzaJ I/H i-Poin t-sponsored Faria's 'shining performance. I~ the Handicap main Faria had to do it from the back as he had to start on the 40-yard line and he also had LO use the outside LO get past the slower traffic_ Young Billy Hamill was the initial leader from lhe short yardage ahead of Cary Faas and Scotty Brown. Tom Burba got into lhird by passing Brown on lap one. Burba then went by Faas for second on lap two but the fans had their attention on Faria and fellow long yardage starter John "Sidewinder" Sandona as they sliced their way through lhe pack. San-dona found his way LO third at lhe end of lhe second circuit. Faria was manning fourlh butas lhey came off turn four he put everyone on their feet with a brealhtaking move lhat propelled him around Sandona and Burba and put him alongside Hamill. It took less than a lap for Faria LO get past the youngster and then drop down for the final lap. Sandona and Brown also got by but inthe end it was the huge throng cheering their lungs out for the 29-year-old Faria. Before lhestan of the Scratch main, announcer Bruce Flanders asked injured Kelly Moran who he favored in the race. After Moran gave credit LO all cif the other riders hecame to Faria and said, "I'll go for my man Michael who is starting on the pole." The crowd let out another roar and lhe race was read~ to begin. On the first try Faria had the lead but Rob Pfetzing got sloppy as they came 0([ turn two. Steve Lucero got a piece of Pfetzing and plowed out of control in the back chute wall. He amazingly got back up after a few tense minutes and made the restart. Faria again got the gate and he paced the pack a11 the way to the checkered flag. Pfetzing stayed close and finished four bike lengths back with Ronnie Correy in lhird and Lucero in fourth. Jim Blan led alllhe way to defeat former National League duo Chris Chaplin and Chri Manin in Division Two action. Graves doubles at Roseburg MX By Clay Light RO EBURG, OR, AUG. 31 Tony Graves put the clamps on the competition in both the 125 and 250cc B classes today at Clark~ Branch Raceway MX, held in Roseburg. After spending a good portion of lhe summer racing elsewhere, Graves returned home to des tory both classes on his Krause.. Racing Hondas. Graves turned in I-I rides in the I25cc division to beat local rider Curtis Cunningham (Kawasaki) and Ya·maha·mounted Darren Clayton. Cunningham used a 2-2 performance LO take second place over Clayton, who finished third overall with a 5-3 showing. Graves also won both motos in the 250cc B class, taking the win over Honda-mounted Ron Milligan. Milligan, who claimed second overall by posting 3-3 rides, finished behind Honda rider Ted Perreard in moLO one, and trailed Nicky Blasdell in moLO two. Blasdell had a 5-2 day to finish third overall, while Perreard LOok fourth overall wilh a 2-6 showing. In the I 25cc C class, another local rider powered away with both motos. Yamaha-mounted Terry Davi won the first moLO ahead of fellow Yamaha pilol Kevin Yeager and Rob Spring (Kawasaki). Davis took the second moLO win over Spring, Yeager and Honda rider Shawn Cox. The overalls read; Davis (I-I), Springs (3-2) and Yeager (2-3). The 250cc C motos were brutal battle between two soulhern Oregon riders, Kelly Sawyer (Honda), and Husky-mounted Fritz Martin. Martin got the nod in the first eight-lap outing with Sawyer and Brian Senn (Honda) in LOw. The second time out, Sawyer bagged the moto win LO take the overall. Sanchez wins LodiST By George Cooper Lom, CA, AUG. 23 P.]. Sanchez pulled of( an unbelievable pass early in the eighth lap of the Pro-Am main event to get by Mark Key for the win and an exciting finish today at Lodi. Key led the race to that point wilh Sanchez on his rear wheel the entire time. Key is a smart racer and not prone LO mistakes and tonight was no exception. Key held his line and did not at any time appear to open the door for Sanchez. Sanchez was watching closely every lap for even the slightest openign, and finally, coming out of turn two on lap eight, he saw' what it was he was looking for and made a pass underKey in an area where no space seemed to exist. Spectators had been on lheir feet to witness what had already been great racing, and when Sanchez made this incredible move, the crowd went wild. Riders representing San Francisco's Excelsior District had a good night. Topping lhe list was Sal Hoffman who took the 500cc Expert win over Second place Sanchez. Sill Fabri railed to vicLOry in the 500cc Novice class in a close race with Todd Jorgenson of Delano. And in the Vet class, Francis Shine did everything he could to try and get by John Taylor, but in the end had to settle for· second place. In the Mini ranks Herb Callen took the first place honors in the BOcc Novice main, while Martin Montes won a close baule with JohrrMitchell of Ceres in the 60cc class. Results JR SPOWY: 1. 'em at CarlsbadMX By Edward Stovin CARLSBAD, CA, AUG. 24 Jim Chamberlain rode persistently at Carlsbad Raceway today to win the motocross combined Pro class. The start of lhe combined Prof Intermediate gate saw Intermediate rider John McGinnis holeshot with Pros Danny Almond and Scou Larson in pursuit. After one lap Almond took control of the moto with Jim Chamberlain keeping his pace. After several laps Chamberlain dove inside _of Almond coming out of the horseshoe turn. The pair collided and bolh went down, handing the lead to third place rider Jeff Healey. Chamberlain got up and continued to race while Almond retired with a broken throttle. Chamberlain closed, but never threatened Healey as Jeff took lhe win followed by Chamberlain and Intermediate Bob Prida and Don Connelly. Moto two proved bigger is not always beuer as JeIf Healey and his KXI25 pulled lhe holeshot and set saiL 'After leading every lap Healey appeared to have his first Pro win in the bag. A last lap flat front tire, however, caused him to wash-out giving Chamberlain the chance to finish in his favorite position. Chamberlain finished first followed by an upset Healey, Scott Lason, Connelly and Prida. Combined Junior action saw Brad Rendett, coming back from a broken foot, power his KX into the lead of lhe first moLO followed by Shawn Slayton, Jon Warneke and Andy Mandell. Bendett's lead was shonlived as he hit a hole and pivoted over the handlebars, giving first to Slayton. Slayton held on to win over Warneke, a charging Ed Bayer and Mandell. Moto two saw Slayton wind his KX 125 into the lead only to be passed by Bayer on the first lap. While Bayer motored away, Warneke moved up to finish second over Slayton and Mandell.
