\ 'DBA National ChamP-lonshl Drag Race SerIes Upsets galore at Union Grove Photo by Nina Holmes UNIO GROVE, WI, AUG. 9-10 The IDBA Summer Nationals at Great Lakes Dragway saw the usual upsets as surprise winners kept cropping up even though a summer shower changed conditions for the at .432 (.401 is. perfect). and Sc~ultz got a red foulltghtto give the wm to Blades at 8.52/153.32. Lorin Buckner cut a better light than Paul Gast in the Super'Comp final but got passed when he had mechanical trouble. Gast won with an 8.75/120.80 run. Forty-three enmints vied for positions in the 32-rider Pro Gas field. Those who qualified did so with a remarkable .19 second spread between the quickest and "slowest" qualifier. Eric Holloway took a third alternate qualifying position all the way to the win in Pro Gas with a 9.49/134.93 to Kenny Williams' 9.43/131.77. Reaction time was the deciding factor with Holloway at .494 and Williams at .564. Smiley Wilson translated the first alternate's position into a final run position but lost on the tree-.532 to a .339-to Bruce Sauer, who took the win at 10.42/108.56 to Wilson's 10.53/ racers and rain in the general area kept spectators away in d roves. . . . For the fust tIme In memory there were more spectators on Saturday than on Sunday, due to a heavy Sunday morning overcast ;lnd rains in the Chicago and Milwaukee area. Kawasaki-mounted Mark Miller laid down a new Funny Bike mph record and backed it up with an identical 186.33 run but fell afoul of a broken boost belt as he staged for the final run against Bobby Baker. Baker broke his bad luck streak with a solo win at 7.47 seconds, 179.64 mph. In Pro Comp Jim Cooper made it two National wins in a row when Neal Lane broke while staging for the final. Cooper logged a 7.85/ 166.35. The Pro tock final saw top qualifier Dave Schultz stage against Marty Blades. Blade cuta phenomenal light Marty Blades (far lane) topped George Bryce in their match-up and then downed Dave Schultz to take top honors in Pro Stock at Union Grove. 121.78. Sauer was the 12th qualifier against an index of 10.20. Greg Sauer was the fast qualifier via a nearperfect 10.205 run. Competition Eliminator saw John Pearson take the win with a 10.12/ 124.82 over Bill Woodruff's 10.54/ 122.79. Suzuki-mounted Tony Parsons continued his seemjngly charmed life with a Summer Nationals Super Eliminator win at 9.42/136.77 and Rex Tucker took runner-up honors with a 9.35/139.31. The ET Bracket winner was local school teacher Bert Stringham who togged a winning 12.04 on an 11.90 dial-in in his fir t ational race.
