AUG. 22 Beta-mounted Scott Head captured yet another National Observed Trials victory today in Wrentham, but it didn't come easily. The two-time National Observed Trials Champion Head edged Beta teammate Ryan Young by 1.8 Both P oints to nail the win ' . ' Head and Young dommated 18 the event as Ihey battled neck-andneck throughoultheday. Third-place finisher was another Bel a rider. Ron Commo Jr., who tallied 114 points, while Honda rider Don Sweet collected a fourth with 116 points. The King Philip Trail Riders laid out a five-mile loop with 16 sections, mostly on a sea of boulders. Almost all the boulders and rocks were covered with the most horrible smelling black mud, and there was endless amounts of rock 'ledges for the riders to muscle through. "It would've been easier ifit had rained," said Head. "The rain would've washed all that greasy mud 0([ the rocks." Riding a four-stroke Honda, Brian Nagengast finished third with 125. There were a few sections et up strickly for the Championship riders. But the Sportsman riders still had to hustle to complete the three loops in the alloted time. Some Sportsman riders moved so fast on their second loop, they mixed in with the Championship riders on their loop. By the third lap, it was an all-out mix with all trying to beat the clock. Seasoned rider, Connecticut's Robin Farmer won the Senior class on his TY Yamaha with a score of 116, beating Yamaha riders Garry Sampsel (1IS.6) and Nils Man120ras (138.4). Honda four-stroke rider Don Sweet finished second in Rhode Island. 11 points behind winner Head. Sweet took fourth in Massachusetts. 139.2 score. Second went to Yamaha rider Don Wilcox with a 1'9.8. Head goes two-lor-two By Boyd Reynolds ESCOHOG, RI, AUG. 23 Scon Head completed a twofor-two weep of rounds ix and seven of the AMA/NATC National Championship Ob: one of few to top the infamous "Step· ping Stones 86" section with any· thing but a five. Brute strength and wrenching power, coupled with debcate balance were needed just to keep moving forward on what course mar· shal Bill Mathewson termed "the tie breaker." It was an incredible mud splattered rock·strewn mountainside that many found impossible. "Just another high score day," said Super Senior winner Jerry Young. Curt Comer, who finished seventh aturday in Massachusetts, picked up a flat tire during the second loop and came back into the tarting area to fix the tire. Comer returned to the action and hustled to finish the loop. He ended up finishing seventh, six points behind Kip Webb. Dave Pyle, Steve Fracy and Bobby Micket round· ed out the top 10. After finishing fourth on Saturday, Bob Toole came back on Sunday and claimed the win in the Sportman class with a 78.8 score, beating Brian Nagenast (84) and Chris Arnold (88).
