Jeff Pingel flies his Kawasaki en route to a secon~ overall finish in the Open Novice class at Dade City, Florida's Dade City Raceway. on fended off the"challenges of Danny Carter. Shawn Wade and Dana McNeil for the top spot. The 400cc final belonged to Milleville from the green light. He ripped the holeshot and Wade could find no place to pass after getting by Mark Augustine in the early laps. The finishing order' was Milleville. Wade and·Augustine. The 500cc final was a stylish runaway for Audie Huff Jr. With a rocket holeshotand a fast outside line. Audie ran away from Rick Anders. who had worked his way around Greg JooP and Wymond Schleyhahn. AUG. 16 John Carver, Mike Amato and Mark Ratcliff nailed overall wins in their respective classes' -125cc Beginner; Open Novice and 250cc C - at Dade City Raceway in Florida. Rob Proctor holeshot the urst 125cc Beginner moto to lead while Carver worked his way up from a fourth place start to take over the lead by the end of the first lap. Proctor hell'\" a close second with Andy Scism stuck close behind. Mike Ratcliff moved up to finish fifth behind Carlos Gomes. Gomes won the battle for the lead at the start of moto two leaving Carver to follow him out of the first turn. The two rode side·by·side before Carver slipped to the outside and cut ahead. He got loose on the doubles. giving the lead back to Gomes. then went down again moments later allowing Gomes to pull ahead. Carver gOt back on tHe gas in time to hold Proctor behind him in third; he was followed by Darren Wells and Scism. Jeff Pingel came-out yictorious as SCOtt Salkill and Lendon Smith battled for the. spot behind him a~. the -start of the first Open Novice mota. Salkill moved away from Smith then pressured Pingel. but got sideways trying to pass him; Smith charged by Salkill into second. SaJ~iJl got back on the gas only to get ··Ioose again, dropping to the rear of the pack. Smith fell on .the last lap; he could only manage a fifth place finish as he watched Mike Amato take second. Moto two was led by Pingel with Salkill hot on his tail. Salkill tried to pull around the leaders as they entered the sweeper. but went under his back tire. slipped and took them both down. Smith jammed into the lead with Amato following. Pingel got back in the running. leaving Salkill behind trying to stan hiS bIke. Smllh cruised in for the win·whi.le Amato fought to hold'Pingel behind him to finish in third. Rusty Blevins fol· lowed in fourth. . Keith Westbrook nailed a wire·to· .wire win in the lirst ~50cc C moto, but had to battle his way up through the pack for a fifth place finish in mota two. In moto one Mark Ratcliff charged ahead of Steven Blakely to take over second 'fin'ding Westbrook too far ahead to reel in. Mike Rogers moved up and cut in behind Ratcliff then poured the pressure on. Ratcli[f held firm to follow Westbrook in for the win with Rogers. Blakley and Erwin Seles rounding out the top five. Ratcliff was out front with Rogers and Todd Colbert charging hard right behind him all.the way to the end in moto two. Westbroo.k had his work cut out [or him after going down in the first turn then coming back into the race near the end of the pack. Right before the finish line a slower rider endoed. bringing out the yellow flag. This took the edge off the la t minute charge for the finish as Ratcliff led Rogers. Colbert. Jeff Minor and Westbrook past the checkered flag-. Ratcliff's 2·1 moto linishes net· ted him the overall. Rogers lOok second with his 3-2 score and Westbrook's 1-5 was good enough for third. In motocross anion, David Reynolus was the Lap of the Pro class • after bauling- it out with Jim Chester. The two went at it lap after lap until Chester fell allowing- Reynolds to take an uncontested win . . In the Senior Mini class, Brown got the holeshot. but a hard fall over a set of whoop-de-doos proved to be his undoing. "Jammin' Jamie" Hacking took the win to add t~ his nat track victory. Croak wins D-4 Moreland Trials By John Knapp MORELAND. NY. AUG. 10 Bob Croak piloted his Honda to an eight-point margin over. Mike Komer, today at D·4's Moreland Trials. As has often been the case this year. the D-6 riders have taken many lrophies in D-4 ('vents wiLh Croak being- no exception. But Komt'r was not Loa disappointed. as his Expen win locked up the 0-4 number-one plate fo.r 1987. Chris Arnold was only thre(:' points away and if he would have beaten Komer the door would still be open. In the Advanced class, Cecil Hollien took on Jody Bliss and won with a seven-point spread. These two have been swapping Advanced wins all year and its been hard for other riders to consistently match their scores. In the Intermediate class. owning a Yamaha seemed to be the ticket with the LOp three: Mark Pettit, Ray Hughson ancfEthan Miller all are mounted on Yamaha TYs. The Novice class had a close ballle with SCOtl Garro JUSt edging out Jason Mankey by a LwO poinl spread. Clerk of the course Larry Lovell laid oul a nice trials with tough sec· tions but most all cleanable with good techniques. He used many off cambers and gullies for this one.
