defeating class pP'Qts leader David Morris. Marin's NS400R triple was the only Honda in a race which fielded 23 Yamahas. Holeshot master David Morris led at the start with Martin and Roddy Rodstein in tow. By the third lap Martin was pressuring Morris for the lead. ot being the type to go quietly, Morris fought tooth and nail to stave off Martin. Morris led at the start of the fourth lap only to have Martin charge past him at the end of the front straight and out brake him into turn one for the lead. Martin, riding in only his ninth road race, held Morris in check thereafter, with Morris looking for an opening or a mistake on the part of Martin. On the last lap the two riders came through turn eight with Morris coming alongside for an instant only to watch Martin slip from his grasp and take a hard earned win. Tom Paris came in third. Clark crushes Penton MX By Pebble Jones PENTON.AL,J LY26 Robbie Clark crushed the opposition at the PenLOn MX when he LOok wins in bOth moLOS of the Pro class today. In the first moto CLark popped the holeshot with Bill Wayda not far behind. Meanwhile, Levon Pendergrass settled into third and Darryl Heisler into fourth. Early on lap two Clark moved ahead of the others. Heisler had managed to move into second position and had moved himself well ahead of Wayda, who was now in third. By the beginning of lap four, Heisler managed to pull closer to Clark, who was still running strong in the lead. The others made similar adjustments in their positions. Later, on lap even, Clark applied more power and moved away, adding distance behind him. Heisler then applied more power him elf. Heisler (250cc) soon shortened the distance between himself and Clark (125cc). Clar~ then applied even more power and stayed ahead of Heisler through the remainder of the race for the win. Heisler placed second; Way'da third and Pendergrass founh. Moto two found Wayda and Clark sharing the holeshot, but it was Clark who took control of the lead. Clark played it safe allowing no room for competition. He immediately powered ahead of Wayda adding distan e after each lap. This left Wayda to be challenged by Heisler, who began to attack Wayda, passing him on lap two. But Wayda quickly retaliated and the two battled back and forth for second. Clark eventually tretched his lead way out and kept in command of the race_ Heisler took a strong second; Wayda third. Results PEE WEE: ,. Billy cantreIlIKTM); 2. B.J. Myers (Kaw); 3. Ingram, Thompson top Benton ST By Karen Lewis BENTON, KY, JULY 24 J.D. Ingram and Jeff Thompson thrilled the crowd with come-from-behind wins in Bemon. Ingram was the Open Amateur cla s winner with Thompson getting the Open Pro class victory on the hard packed short track. Hometown favorite Jody Dick wired the tart of the Open Amateur final with Derek Morly, David Orange and Phillip Thompson behind. Thompson dropped Orange a notch on lap two with Morly slipping off the groove to go to the rear of the pack. Lap three saw Dick and Orange both retire with broken chains while new leader Thompson was feeling the pressure from Ingram. Ingram went to the front at the halfway flags with Trent Teague following him. Ingram never looked back and built up a small lead over second place finisher Teague. Morly, who had been picking off riders every lap, came in th ird with Thompson and Scott Denton rounding out the top five. Tim Rhodes led a ix rider freight train consi ting of Bobby Wilson, Jeff Thompson. Rick Wrather, Steve helton and David Warren In tbe Open Pro final. Rhodes recovered to finish second. Rick Wrather also slipped by Wilson who was dropped to fifth on the last corner by Steve Shelton. Brian Shell took control of the 200cc Amateur final and led every lap enroute to the win. Kevin Fillbeck held second early in the race until Bobby G riggs and John Arnold found a way by. Griggs closed the gap on Shell but was shy of the mark at the flag. Arnold finished a safe third and Fillbeck held off Dennis Pritchard for fourth. Ben Edwards ran eight straight perfect laps in the 200cc Pro class to card the win. Jay Hannah pressured Edwards the entire way but had to set'tle for second over Craig Gilland's third place ride.
