I Expert Doug Davis rode his Harley-Davidson XR750 to the win tonight at the Dean Galluppromoted half mile at Lima. Davis was joined by Junior Bob Farver and Scott Stump as the big winners on the nighL. The time Lrials. however. were own· ed by Expert Chad Felicia at 29.320 and Junior Farver at 26.882. The 1978 record, set by Dwayne How LOn, reo mained intact. The Pro·Am qualifiers were won by Ben West, David Wass, Stump and Scott Mohan. Fast qualifier Farver kept the Farver Sawmill/Cambria Tool/Gene & Jan TouBeau/Mark Fasbender/Terry Easterbay/M&D and Mary·sponsored Woods·ROLax rolling by winning the first and fastest of the Junior heats. Kevin Heath and Chance Darling won th remaining six·lap events. Salinas, California's Felicia won the first Expert heat by keeping Davis, Dan Ingram, Mark Ashton, Roger Durkee and Greg Gatli[[ aL bay. Donnie ESLep LOok the Steelmasters XR LO the win in the second heat at the Clark Gounty Fairgrounds. Brian Atherton and Darrin Erichsen kept the Orient, Ohio, pilot honest from second and third spots. Guy Hugh· son was fourth followed by Marty Bushman and Dan Knecht. Stump took the Smitty'S HD/ Stump Insurance/HogWash/ 11Oei/ Kal Gard 500 from the outside pole to victory lane without a miscue. The battle was for the place and show spots as West and Mohan had at one another for most o[ the m.ain event. Not until lap eight did West break free to make a run at Stump; Jim Hollister finished fourth. Dave Gamlin finished fifth ahead of Scott Knecht, Dean Standish, Jim Keristes, Wass, Al Perry, Ron R,ehmert and David Hackett. Farver made it three·for·Lhree or maybe four·for·four. He swept away the Junior [ield and then survived a po t-race engine protest. Race·long banles developed for second and four· th place positions as AshLOn waited impatiemly for Heath LO make a mis· take. Heath disappointed Ashton with a ride on a string for 10 laps; fourth place was in the hands of Darling most of the time but Chris Pittman, Willie McCoy, Jack Mayer, and Les Wash bon all wanted La move out of the pea-gravel blast. With a lap to go, Wash bon worked his way past Pittman LO claim fifth place behind Darling; Pittman held 0([ McCoy and Mayer for sixth. Glenn Hughson and Greg Logue filled ouL the field in ninth and 10th. Turn one claimed the twO non·finishers - [irst Rod Comer and later Jerry Robson. After listing his sponsors, Farver gave spe· cial thanks to the Atherton family for their help. Felicia had the outside pole but Erichsen won th.e race LO turn one in the Expert cJas . Erichsen was remov· ed from the point position by Ather· LOn aL the completion oftbe first tour. Atherton apparently had watched Estep ride the rim in their heat and sought LO duplicate the line. Davis and Erichsen watched ALherton from the middle and the bottom of the race Lrack, respectively. As the ra e pro· gressed, Davis closed on Atherton until they were side·by·side, On the start of the fourth lap, Atherton went to the cushion in turn one while Davis circulated a few feet below. By the middle of the turn. Davis put the KK After Market/Gary Stozenburg XR 750 past Atherton. With Davis in the lead, Al.henon·s rear wbeel caught oneal' the poles holding up the chain link fence and he crashed hard. Feli· cia and Erichsen ended up in the wrong place at the right time as Al.herLOn·s pilotless bike crossed the track and caused them to go down. The race was stopped and Atherton took the com pu lsory ride to the has· pital. Erichsen ma'de the restart while a partially dazed Felicia was emo· tionally crushed: "My bike is trashed and I didn't make any money!" Davis had the restart wired and led the remailideroftl1l'event. Ingram, Estep and AshlOn gave the crowd what they came [or as they argued over second
