Lewis seuled for econd, followed by Mike Butler. Nicky Sterling wound up taking the Pro-Am victory despite serious pressure by Grady Phillips and Mike Butler. Barry Benkert, who was in top contention, took a shot to the knee when he missed the foot peg riding high out of turn four. Phillips came back to capture the limelight in the 250cc class, as he powered his BulLaco to victory. Mercier tops Shannonville RR By Jeremy Fleming SHANNONVILLE, CAN, AUG. 10 The seventh round of the 11event Castrol Eastern Canada Challenge, the Dunlop Qualifier Cup, saw Suzuki Superbikers Norm Murphy and Michel Mercier dominate Pro action. Each won a final with Suzuki Canadabacked Mercier taking the Pro Open Superbike feature. Mercier was a strong favorite to dominate the regional event on his Mike Crompton tuned, CAM 21 Treen/Shoei/Dunlop/White Powerl Yoshimura/Phoenix/Wiseco-backed Suzuki GSXR750R Limited Edition. After bauling with Gary Goodfellow and Art Robbins at the National two weeks earlier, Mercier lined up as the rider to beat. But Murphy had something to prove. From the stan of the feature, however, Paul MacMillan led on his stock Honda Interceptor. While MacMillan's previous efforts on production machinery have been strong, this performance was brilliant. Behind MacMillan, Clive g-A-Kien, Murphy, Mercier and Steve Nelson aJi bauled for position. By lap five the crowd was beginning to sense a possible upset as MacMiJian continued to ride hard and hang on to a slim lead. Then Ng-A-Kien tried a pass coming off the long straight going into the slowest corner, turn two. Ng-A-Kien hit MacMillan, both went 0(( the track and MacMillan went down. A post-race protest concerning the incident resulted in NgA-Kien receiving a brief license suspension. With Ng-A-Kien resuming way back, only to retire later, and MacMillan out, Mercier and Murphy cranked up the pace to pull away from Nelson. Both led, but in the end Mercier took the victory with an advantage of just over a second from Murphy. Nelson placed third. Production Yamaha FZ750 rider Tom Douglas put in a brave performance to hold off the Suzuki GSXR1100 of Derrick Medaglia for fourth. Douglas was riding with a wrist broken at the ational. The final money position was sixth and David Grummetl's GSXR750 held oH Chris Knowles' Honda RS250 by a few feet for that spot. The Pro 750 Superbike final saw Murphy upset Mercier and score a clear win. Mercier trailed Murphy at the start with Ng-A-Kien, McMillan and Nelson again filling out the top five. Then Mercier cranked up the pace and passed Murphy. But Murphy stuffed asurprised Mercier and then pulled away slightly for the win. MacMillan was another rider to run into pace problems, taking a surprise loss to the Suzuki RG500 of Carl Patoine in 750cc Production. It was MacMillan's first Shannonville Production loss of the year. The two were close for the whole race, but Patoine pulled away slightly on the last lap. Things were diHerent in Pro Open Production with MacMillan takinghis usual walk-away win. Mario DuHamel recovered from a 750cc class first lap crash that eliminated Michel Merciennd Norm Murphy dice in the 750cc Superbike class atthe Castrol Eastern Canada Challenge in Shannonville Canada. both DuHamel and fellow front-runner Al Royer to finish second, but was way behind MacMillan. Rick Pfeilsticker inherited the lead and held on for several laps under pressure from Chuck leck and Tail. leck and Tait got by on the last lap with Krech tailing Pfeilsticker for fourth at the flag.
