Douglas dominates Baylands MX By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, JULY 23 A large en try of Veteran Masters showed up at Baylands and the serious but clean rivalry between frequent winner Duane Hughes and Phil Douglas continued. This time, however, Douglas came away with the win. Relative newcomer Duane Joice on a Honda grabbed the early lead in moto one. He got into the ISO° first corner second behind Hughes, but came out of the corner in the lead. Fighting for position behind him was another newcomer to the Baylands action, John Scruggs on yet another Honda; this moto was a test for the newcomers and they passed with flying colors. Joice hung on for first and he never actually received a serious challenge. Scruggs got pressured at midmoto by Douglas and was able to keep Douglas at bay long enough so that there was insufficient time remaining in the molO for the hard-eharging Douglas to mount an attack on Joices' lead; Hughes finished fourth. In their second outing Douglas got inlO the first corner with Mike Lane, Hughes and Joice. Before the first lap was over the front running duo was Joice and Hughes. On the difficult stutter bumps, Douglas made his move and got by Hughes, His pass on Joice came late in the moto when he put a wheel in under him in a right hander prior lO the off-camber tabletop jump. The finish order was Douglas, Joice, Scruggs and Lane. This gave Douglas with a 2-1 evening the nod for the overall over Joice who registered a 1-2. In other class action, Rick Ryan of San Jose piloted a pair of sponsored Kawasaki machines to victory in the 125 and 250cc classes then took an independent and borrowed big-bore Honda to victory in the Open class for Professionals. His most serious competitor on this night was Open Pro rider Glen Harrison on a wellprepped YZ Yamaha. Harrison had a considerable lead, but late in the moLO Ryan reeled him in to win gOlllg away. ... ' .'O.'O'O'O.'O . Results PEE WEE; 1. Clayton Keates (Kawr. 2. Jerry Cunha (Yam); 3.
