Getz shines at Sun-Run Enduro By Merle Acord GEORGETOWN, IL, AUG. 3 Kelly Geu's specialty is tight woods and the Salt Fork Din Riders Sun-Run Enduro was tailor-made for the Bike Barn Can-Am rider. Geu charged the first' section, an 18.2 mile tangle of creeks, gnarly hills, dry washes and tight trails and dropped 17 minutes, the be t time of the day through that section. Getl finished the day with a 22point total, one-minute quicker than High Point A rider Dave Pucharich aboard a MCC Husqvarna 250. "The first section will be the test," said Richard Both the club member responsible for laying out the first section. "We have a bunch of stull four or five miles long but the rider who gets through the first section the fastest will probably win overalL" Getl, because of his domination of hare scramble and enduro events in District 17, is often the subject of bench racing at the club grounds after the runs. Gary Peterson, fourth place Cinisher in the 200cc A class, said this about Geu's woods riding: "Kelly caught me in that first woods section so I followed him for a while. And I think one of the reasons Getl rides the woods so well is nothing imimidates him. He never hesitates: uphills, downhills, creek banks, what ever, it's all the same to him." Dan Fargen, riding a MiddlelOwn Kawasaki, dropped 19 minute through the first section and fini hed the run with 25 poims to win the 200cc A class. Fargen, discussing a severely twisted knee he injured in a hare s rambles get-off several weeks earlier, said, "My knee didn't hurt and it's gelling stronger, but I felt like I was all over the trail. I really need 10 get my rhythm ba k." Craig Hayes, on a MCC Husky, wa a few ticks of the second hand late gelling inlO the second check and that point dropped him 10 second in the 200cc A class. Randy Johnson and Bob Bean, both Husky 400-moumed, dropped 25 points each and went to the tiebreaker to decide the winner in the Open A class. Johnson won by two seconds. Dave Seyller and Duane Eller also went 10 the tie-breaker checks for the third and fourth place trophies when they came up with identical score of 28. Seyller lOok the nod. Bean, a member of this year's I DE team, was the second rider off the line. "I wanted an early number," said Bean. "But I didn't want to break trail all day, and they had a lot of new trail in the first section." John hafer dropped 29 points 10 edge out Dennis Schenk in the Senior A class, but John's crowning (crowing) glory was dropping less poims than his son Greg, who rode in the 250 c A class, and his fri 'nd, Open A rider Mark McCrimmon. ''I'm going to bolt the trophy to the hood," said a gleeful Shafer. "Just like in The Wild Ones. Then I'm going 10 tell these guys all about my ride all the way across Illinois." Results OVERALL: 1.
