Collings mauls Middleford ST By Woody Miller MIDDLEFORD, DE, J LY 31 The sixth round of the Delaware Short Track Championship at Middleford Speedway produced orne hot racing. AIter winning the 250cc class heat, Roy Collings put his Suzuki on the pole for the final with Rick Johnson, making only his second appearance of the series, lining up next to him after finishing second in the heat. When the green light flashed to start the main, it was Mike Erving and his Arrow Racing Bultaco leading into turn one. Coming off turn two Erving got sideways and Collings shot by him into the lead. At the .eod of the initial lap, Collings led with Johnson and Erving in tow. By the end of the third lap, Mark Miller had displaced Erving for third and had set his ights on Johnson. Collings maintained his leading position while Erving was trying to overcome a second tank slapper. On lap even Miller put his Diamood Motor ports-sponsored Honda ahead of Johnson for good, and soon after Erving lipped by Johnson as well and the top three position were set. The checkered flag waved and Collings collected his second series win in a row. Miller came back to capture both the 500cc class heat and final. Results 250: 1. Roy Collings (SUl); 2. He took to the outside of Steve Crawford and Eddie [ngels for the last two laps and held the rim ride line, making it work off the last twO turns for the win. Shoei Sierra- ponsored Robinson continued the march through the semis, winning over Pat Linn. Martz took the final transfer in a very close finish over Geranio. Steve Crawford applied pres ure for the econd semi win over Ingels who had his hands full with Mike Parsons. Delacy got caught tOO far outside and missed by one. Robin on gOt a great start for the main with Linn riding the outside lineonceag-din. but there was nothing there this time and Linn faded. Reep's victory was a clean sweep in both motos over 17 other competitors. [n moto one, the hot new prospect from Santa Rosa [ought off repeated challenges from Paul Fitzgerald and his Honda. Reep beat everyone to the. first corner and then proceeded LO run a flawless moto. Fitzgerald came [rom about fourth in the first turn LO take second in the moLO, ahead of Kawasaki-mounted Larry Romer. In their second outing it was an up-LO-the-task Reep gelling the win again over equally consistent Fitzgerald. Coming in third Bob Zadu on a Honda.Reep has butLO win twO more motos and he will be moved up to the Junior class. Other 125cc action saw a great duel among Intermediates Steve Weyrauch, Mark LaubeandJohn Ensing. In the first moto, Weyrauch gOt the holeshot and had the task o[ keeping his Contra Costa Honda-sponsored Kawasaki out in (ront of Mark Laube on a Suzuki.The puzzle of sponsorship of Weyrauch was not explained so it is speculation that he may be riding a new Honda or that Contra Costa Honda will also be taking on the Kawasaki brand. The second mota showed that John Ensign could not be counted out as he bea t the pack into the 180 degree first turn. However, his lead didn't last but a half lap when Weyrauch powered by. Weyrauch got the overall vicLOry with his double maLO wins and the great second mota performance of Ensign earned him second place overall. Open Intermediate action was exciting as newcomer Tim Dallara put his Honda out in front at the outset and kept in front .until the last lap when veteran Manny Ornellas and his Coast Honda/jSE Racing-sponsored Honda !!;Ot by.
