Grove, Thoen; share Los Banos STw;ns By Mike Vancil LOS BANOS, CA, JULY 19 Chris Thoeni and Kendel Grove each overcame multiple problems to capture first places in their respective classes at the R&D Enterprises-promoted, AMAsanctioned short track program at the fairgrounds in Los Banos. This was the fourth of five events scheduled in the mini-series put together by the promoter organization. In the 250cc Novice heat race Kendel Grove slid down and into a poor finishing position; an unfortunate mistake for he was running second behind early leader Bill Fagundes. I3fttr'lt-ift~ef'o Gt-eves' 11'Ii~_Ufle- LAWRENCEBURG, IN, AUG 3 Honda-mounted Nicky Sterling took home the lion's share of an almost $600 purse after winning the Friday night, Pro-Am short track at Lawrenceburg Speedway. . The Pro-Am race was stopped prematurely by flagman John DeMoisey about half way through the event when Mario Todd, also Hondamounted, fell at his feet, and DeMoisey unintentionally waved the flag in his hand - a red flag - while trying to move out of the way. Some riders SLOpped, others continued racing; shortly after the incident of[icials decided a full restart was necessary, Scon Hall Vaughn powered to the front of the pack at the restart, but took a nosedive in turn three, leaving Sterling to take over the LOp spot. Todd nearly took the lead from Sterling coming out of the last corner on the last lap, but he was outpowered down the stretch and lost by inches. Grady Phelps finished a close third. Honda-mounted Vaughn took the win in the open class competition, while Todd went down in another race-stopping crash that sent him semi-conscious LO the hospital; he was not seriously hurt. Patric Collins of Lawrenceburg finished second, while Doug Gardner rounded out the LOp three. Phl1 Palmer won both the80ccand 125cc main events, while Todd took the 250cc fea ture race. Fagundes took an easy spill and by the time he got going again his finish position was guaranteed at the back. Winner of the heat race, David Freeze, Yamaha two-stroke, selected his start position in the final with high hopes of repeating the heat race win. At the starter's green light signal the 10rider final crammed into the first corner. At the exit of turn two the leader was Fagundes on his Kawasaki, but only slightly ahead of Grove. Stuck in heavy traffic was usual high placer, Louis Canepa on another Kawasaki. As the final progressed the only real position changing was achieved by Canepa as he worked up to begin challenging the leaders. At one point, exiting turn four both Grove and Canepa got around Fagundes; Grove down low and Canepa on the outside. However, neither hooked up well enough to make the pass stick and when the three riders dove into turn one it was Fagundes in the lead again. At turn three Grove began his setup pass on Fagundes in which he moved inside again, but selected a better portion of the track and obtained the needed traction coming out of the fourth corner. The event was a combined effort by the Pennsylvania Trials Riders and the PA Plonkers, in which Louie Bolopue and Norvil Wright domil')ated. Saturday'S event, run by PTR, was the ninth annual Tiadaghton Forest Cup. The trial chaJlenged the riders LO five sections per class with six loops around the 3.6-mile loop. A LOtal of 35 riders turned out. There was a threat of rain most of the day, but that waited until Sunday.The sections were run mostly in two creeks, with a few loose climbs and logs sections. Bolopue LOPped the Expert class with 21 points, 10 of which came on his last loop, while Wright took home the Amateur win, even though he arrived about an hour late for the start time. The Intermediate class went LO Mark Williams, while the Novice class was dominated by Brian Blanchard who had an outstanding seven-point LOtal for the day. Charlie Clements won the Senior class with a good 38 point LOtal. Sunday's event was the Forks Challenge III organized by the PA PIonkers. Fifty-six riders didn't let the rain dampen their spirits, as they fac'ed six sections per class and six times around the same loop as Saturday. The Novice class seemed to master their sections as there were very few fives. It was once again shown why Brian Blanchard is the Rookie of the Year in Maryland; he had just II points. Jason Mankey was second with 17 points. The Intermediate win went to Mark Witmer with an excellent I4 point total, while Bunkey Miller from Maryland took a close second with 19 points on the day. The upset of the day came in the Senior clas with ¥:evin Hickey turning in a 26 point total, beating Charlie Clements with 35 poims. Terry Anselmo took the Amateur class with 62 points and is well on his way LO the number one Amateur spot in District 6. Cecil Hollien was second with 69 points. The Expert class saw Ryan Young, still hot from his victory over Scott Head in the Wisconsin National, take first place with 29 points. Bolopue was second with 49 on the day. Results SATURDAV EX: 1.
