Raceway, before Hampton crashed out of the race.

and steadily pulled away from the
rest of the field to take the win. Chuck
Magnusson on another GSXRll00
took second and Ed Key took third on
his Yamaha FZ750.
The B Production race looked like
it might be ChivingLOn's toughest
challenge. A field of hot Yamaha FZ
riders were looking for an upset win
over Chivington. As the green flag
dropped Terry Hampton took the
early lead on his Dreyer YamahaiBelRay/Bell Helmets FZ750. ChivingLOn was righton Hampton's tail. The
duo quickly broke away from the rest
of the field and swapped the lead several times. either rider could gain an
advantage on the other and it looked
like the race would go LO the wire. On
the fifth lap Chivington drafted past
Hampton on the long backside sweepercominginto the bowl (a hard, righthand banked turn); HampLOn got a
little anxious, went high trying to
pass on the outside and crashed. ChivingLOn went unchallenged the rest
of the way for the win.
At the last minute ChivingLOn signed up for the Michigan Gran Prix
race, and gridded at the rear.
Dave Knapp led Ed Key and Michigan Gran Prix points leader Jim
Knipp into turn one. By lap three
Knipp powered his Greenwood
Honda-sponsored Yamaha TZ500
into the lead but ChivingLOn was
charging and had worked his way up
to third. On lap four Knipp turned
around and saw Chivington's GSXR1100 breathing down his neck. Knipp
turned up the boost and turned a
I:31.57, a new track record.
As the two caught lapped traI£ic,
ChivingLOn used the quicker acceleration of his Suzuki LO his advantage
and got around Knipp after nearly
rear-ending him when the two came
upon much slower riders.
Lapped traClic played havoc on
Knipp as he was held up by two riders
in a turn, Chivington had passed
them just before the turn. On the last
lap Knipp made a last-ditch effon to
catch Chivington but came up about
lO bike lengths shon at the line.
A major upset took place in the
Interceptor race. Kurt Hall in his first
race back was still recove.ring from a
shoulder operation he had three weekends a~o following a crash at this
track. Hall still managed to win the
Saturday heat race just ahead of Ed
Key. In the Sunday final, however, it
was all Novice Scott Zampach on his
Torque Center sponsored VF500.
lampach beat Key and Hall by 12
seconds at the end. When Key was
asked what happened, he replied,
"It·s simply a case of a very fast
Novice rider out-riding a couple of
Experts, that's all."

MACOMB, IL, JULY 26
Reed Benilino slid his Open
Class Rotax to victory at today's
LaMoine Ramblers short track,
the 23rd round of AMA D-I 7's
summer din track series.
Yamaha-mounted Rick Knuth rode
to a wire-to-wire win in the Open
class heat race, followed across the
line by Audie Huff and Benilino.
When the green £lag fell in the main
event. however, Benilino powered
his Benilino-Produce Rotax into the
lead coming out of turn two, setting a
hot pace for Huff, Danny Hollenbeck
and Knuth to follow. The four riders
battled fiercely for the lead, with
Huff getting side-by-side with Bertilino several times. Bertilino held fast
to the traction line, constantly forcing Huff down on the slick groove or
up in the powder; HuH had to seule
for second. Hollenbeck took third,
Knuth finished fourth, and Rick
Anders rounded out the top five.
Terry Bond strapped an Expert
plate onto his old 250 Bultaco and
made short work of the competition
in the 500cc Senior class. Les Eslinger
gassed his Yamaha into the early
lead, towing Honda-mounted Jim
Kidman and Bond. Bond took the
high line around the leaders on the
first lap, and left Eslinger to top
Kidman for second. Dave Stanfield
finished fourth.
Shawn Wade had problems with
his Bultaco's transmission during the
first two laps of the 400cc class final,
but the bike straightened out on lap
three, allowing Wade to move up and
overtake front-runners Terry Leffler,
IMuk A,. '8''6lYle;iUK1 CJeii~iJ1e.vill41.
Leffler, riding a 200cc Yamaha, found
the moves to get by Augustine and
Milleville, but couldn't get around
leader Wade. Augustine bested Mil·
levi lie for Lhird at the line.
Tom Sutton and Bart Schmulbach
took the heat race wins in the 250cc
class, but it was Honda-mounted
Don Carter who exploded into the
lead at the start of the main event.
Keith Beckner held second spot for
the first two laps, but gave way to Jon
Lundgren on lap three. Lundgren
pushed Carter hard, but the Honda
rider held on for a wire-to·wire win,
his first victory of the year. .
Kawasaki-mounted Bart SchmuJ·
bach took the heat race win in the
l25cc class, but Scott Huff got the
holeshot in the main event, and made
Schmulbach chase him for the entire
race. HuH bested Schmulbach at the
flag, Brian Stipp finished a close
Lhird, and Dave Stanfield took fourth.
