Allyn, Spear top South woods MX by John Spear SOUTHWOODS, NY, JULY 13 Leonard Allyn rode to a 1-1 finish today to take the win in the 125ccExpertclassatSouthwoods MX. The Open Expert overall was claimed by Mike Spear, who al 0 powered his way to back-toback win. Heavy rains for two straight days had turned the outhwoods track into a mud bath that affected almost every race. To top it off, a LOrrential rain from a thunder-and-lightning storm forced cancellation of the day' final three moLOS. In the second 125cc moLO, Allyn got off the line in midpack. By the end of the fir tlap, he had moved up LO fifth, while John Coen, who had grabbed the holeshOl, was batuing for first place with Gene Gentsch and Jeff Dirago. Dirago fell and lost any chance for a good overall by not recovering until midpack. Gentsch took over the lead on the fourth lap, with Allyn moving into second place a lap la ter. Allyn passed Gentsch in th e back section on lap five to take over a lead he would never lose. Gent ch tried LO take it back over the stUller bumps before the checkers, but he went down hard, giving Allyn an easy win. Gentsch went down again that lap, allowing Steve Desiderio to move into second. Spear trailed Kei th Mann and Doug Mitchell in the first Open Expert moto, but got his chance for the lead when Mann fell, and Mitchell stalled, within a corner of each other. Spear went on LO an easy win, while Mann got going before Mitchell LO take second. The second Open moLO turned out to be brutal. Halfway through the race, the skies opened up and dropped an inch of rain on the track in less than 10 minute. Spear, who was third out of the gate, ripped into the lead down the long straight, with Mitchell tight on his rear wheel. The two pulled away from the pack, but Mitchell was forced to drop off the pace when the rain began; the heavy m.ud thrown up by Spear's bike hindered his vision. During the rain, the race turned into a parade with each rider just holding on LO finish. Rob McCullough grabbed the holeshot in the first 250cc Expert moLO, and held ule lead all the way. He wa awarded the overall when the second moto was cancelled. Bob Weiss was the 250 c Amateur winner, while John Crolle won the Senior Expert race and David Dangerfield took the Senior Amateur competition. The Open Amateurs were allowed to race their final moLO, but it was started and run in the same down- pour that hit the Open Experts. John Donovan showed his consistency with a 3-2 for the overall while John Leithead got second wi th a 6- 1. Big Mike Hoensch won the opening moLO but dropped LO ninth in ule econd moLO to finish fifth overall. enior Mini rider Dennis Dillin . found the muddy track LO his liking. He swept LO vicLOry in both moLO , followed by Brad Batson with a pair of econdsand Mark Perricelli with a pair of iliirds. Junior Mini rider Jody Mitchell rode as fast in themuda hedoes on a dry track, LO take a pairof win. Chad O'Hara picked up the overall in the l25cc Novice class with an unlikely 7-2 showing. Larry"LaBlanc's second was ju t as strange; he had a 3-6 day. First moLO winner Ricky Bozentko dropped to 11th in the econd moLO, while Craig mith won the second moLO after finishing 15th in the first. 3 SURE WAYS TO KNOW A GREAT EXHAUST DESIGN 1) Customers love it. 2) Competitors copy it. 3) Magazines print political tests about it. 1) No one gets "stuck" with an MX2.
