The California Wildlife Federation board of directors voted unanimously to oppose California Senator Alan Cranston's 2061, the California Desen Protection Act of 1986, which would pre-empt the BLM-prepared California Desert Plan. Explaining the VOle, the August issue of the federation's newspaper, California Wildlife, said "Cranston's bill, if passed, would have far-reaching detrimental impacts on recreational and commercial use on millions of acres of California's desert ... Millions of dollars were spent in preparing the California Desen Plan during three years of intense study that included numerous public meetings. Cranston's new bill would flush public monies already expended down the drain and would place unnecessary restrictions on many desert recreationists." 0' Bob Bakker Van Nuys, California, and passenger Warren Ryan will attempt to set the world motorcycle sidecar ~peed record during the 1986 Bonneville Speed Trials held at the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah, August 17-23. Bakker's sidecar will be powered by a turbo-charged Kawasaki with the engine located behind the driver; BMW holds the abso- lute sidecar speed record at '87 mph. The layout has been lengthened and widened to meet FIM standards, with Roger DeCoster and Vic Wilson helping with the track design. The British Road Racing Grand Prix will get a change of venue for '987 as the race moves to Donington Park. _ Doctors at North West Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas, spent four hours July 30 reconstructing the right hand of dirt tracker Sammy Sweet. Surgeons inserted several pins and a steel plate into Sweet's hand, which was injured when Sweet's Pyramid Builders Harley-Davidson seized coming out of turn two during the main event at the July 26 DuQuoin Mile. Sweet will take six to eight weeks to recuperate, and hopes to be back in action in time for the San Jose Mile in California on Septemb 14. Long-time Ohio din track tuner Edgar "Furgie" Fuhr is listed in fair condition at Miami Valley Hospital in ' Dayton, Ohio, where he was hospitalized recently for gall stones, which adversely affected his weak hean. Fuhr has a long history of heart problems, including single bypass surgery in 1970, triple bypass surgery in 1983, and six heart attacks. "Furgie" has tuned for, or sponsored, many of the top racers hailing from the Ohio area, including George Roeder, Steve Morehead and former National Champion Gary SCOtt.
