Rothmans Honda's Wayne Gardner won his third 500cc Grand Prix of 1986 in the rain-sodden British round of the World Championship Road Race Series held, at Silverstone on August 3. The Australian beat Belgian Didier DeRadigues (Hon) and Marlboro Yamaha's Eddie Lawson; Lawson's teammate, Rob McElnea, and Team Lucky Strike Roberts' Randy Mamola (Yam) rounded out the top five, The race was delayed one hour after Australian Paul Lewis crashed on the first lap and broke three bones in his foot. Team Lucky Strike Roberts' Mike Baldwin finished 16th in the race after suffering through gearing and vision problems. Lawson's 109 points still leads the championship to Gardner's 93 and Mamola's 92, Frenchman Dominque Sarron (Hon) beatchampionship-Ieader Carlos Lavado (Yam) to win the 250cc class at Silverstone on August 3; Spaniard Sito Pons finished third. Lavado leads Pons, 99-84, in the race for the 250cc title. In the 125cc class, August Auinger (MBA) LOok the win over Domencico Brigaglia (Duc) and Luca Cadalora. Britain's Ian McConachie won the 80cc class and the team of E. Streuer and B. Schnieders won the sidecar race. Kawasaki's Georges Jobe won both motos of the 500cc Motocross Grand Prix in Namur, Belgium, on August 3. Eric Geboers (Hon) went 2-2 for second overall with Andre Malherbe's (Hon) 3-3 taking third. World Champion David Thorpe (Hon) finished fourth with a 5-4 tally; in the championship point standings, Thorpe leads the chase with 281 points to Geboers' 278 and Malherbe's 277 with only one round remaining in the series; it's scheduled for Luxembourg on August 10. Reports from Europe indicate that Freddie Spencer has signed to again ride a Rothmans Honda in the 1987 World Championship. Spencer, wllo hasn't scored a single point in 1986 due to a wrist injury, will miss the remaining two Grands Prix but will race in the japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka in September. 2 Team Lucky Strike Roberts' Randy Mamola cracked a bone in his shoulder during practice for the August 3 British Grand Prix. but still finished fifth in the race. The Californian went into shock following the race from a combination of the pain and the nearfreezing weather conditions; Mamola was put on a glucose I.V. and was later released from the on-track hospital. Frenchman Christian Sarron (Yam) crashed in the wet 500cc GP and broke a bone in his elbow; Sarron is expected to miss the August 10 Swedish Grand Prix, Husqvarna's Terry Cunningham captured the overall win during round seven of the AMA National Championship Enduro Series in Speedsville, New York, August 3. Mike Fisher finished second, ahead of Costa Rica National Champion Adrean Roberts and U.S. rider Randy Rodriquez. Guatemala National Champion Juan Meyer finished second in the 125s followed by Keith O'Neal and Willy Simons. O'Neal was leading the 125cc final before spectators started throwing rocks and beer cans at him. Team Suzuki's A.j. Seven-time road racing World Champion John Surtees rode a Manx Norton in a demonstration vintage race held in conjunction with the French Grand Prix at Paul Ricard on July 20, crossing the finish line second. Surtees was followed across the finish line by New Zealand's four-time World Champion Hugh Anderson on a G50 Matchless, with American Dave Roper first on a Team Obsolete G50 Matchless. Inland MOLOrcycie Speedway in San Bernardino, California, will host chopper match races during inter- miSSIOn between reguiar speedway races on August 6, August 13 and September 10. The chopper races at Inland MOLOrcycie Speedway are an annual affair; the defending champion is known as Hank The Crank. The AMA is rallying support for an Arizona petition drive to place a referendum on the 55 mph speed limit on the November ballot. Arizona's 55 mph speed limit is set to expire October 1, and a successful petition drive and vote could overturn the law if it is reinstated.. john Hateley is organizing four-stroke TT races at Kern County Fairground in Bakersfield, California on September 7; the event will feature all classes and 100% Pro payback, with Class C tires required. BMW of North America is recalling 9712 K1 00 and K75 motorcycles built prior to February 1986 to inspect for a possible throttle cable defect. The company estimates that about 1 0% of the machines may have throttle cables bent during installation at the factory, and as a result may chafe and possibly fray. Owners ofthe affected machines have been asked to bring the bikes to a BMW dealer for inspection and, if necessary. replacement of the throttle cable. SMX, NMA and CRC will co-host the Yamaha-sponsored Western States Championship, a six-race southern Cal·ifornia motocross series scheduled to start September 7 at Perris Raceway in Perris, California. Each organization will hold two of the six events and a license from any of the three will be honored at all six events. The series will feature about $40,000 worth of purse, prizes and contingency money. Yamashita World Trading Co. is. organizing a 10-day motorcycle tour of Japan, including free time in "tokyo and Osaka. a visit to the Yamaha factory, road races at Fuji International Speedway and a stop at the Fuji Motorcycle Museum. Taylor Racing (formerly Eatherley Racing) was second on another GSXRIIOOand johnson & Wood Racing finished third overall on a Yamaha FZ750. Team Visa's Bob Green and Garry Grif£ith topped the GTU class on a Yamaha Fj600, finishing sixth overall. San Diego Motor Racing Associates, the group backing the planned San Diego (California)lntemational Raceway, has asked the AMA to ask the FIM for a a World Championship 250 and 500cc Road Race Grand Prix to be held at the yet-tobe-builttrack in the spring of 1988. According to San Diego Motor Racing Associates spokesman Steve Mclaughlin, the track will be built to FIM Grand Prix standards and should be completed by the end of 1987. Bruce Walters' first Turkey Run poker run was held out of Walters Brothers Harley-Davidson in Peoria, Illinois, in 1936; on September 21, the Peoria M.e. will hold the 50th annual Turkey Run with AMA sanction. The California Off Road Vehicle Association (CORVA) has scheduled its annual North/South Jamboree in the Quail Canyon (California) area on September 20-21. A House of Representatives bill calling for a ban of all forms of LObacco advertising in the United States would mandate the end of R.]. Reynolds' support for the AMA Grand ational Championship/Camel Pro Series. House Resolution 4972 would ban all forms of tobacco advertising, including the "sponsorship of athletic, artistic or other events under the registered trademark of a tobacco product." The bill was introduced by Representative Mike Synar (D-OK), (who recently voted for a proposed ban of three-wheeled ATVs during a unrelated action by the House Government Operations Committee), and was co-sponsored by Mike Lowry (DWA), James V. Hansen (R-UT), Samuel S. Stratton (D-NY), Gerry E. Studds (D-MA), and Chester G. Atkins (D-MA).
