Cliff clobbers Action Park Spdwy By Todd Kroh GREENE, N.Y., JULY 19 It took 11 weeks, but finally a rider has won two Handicap main events this season at Action Park East Speedway. The man who achieved this feat was Pat Cliff, the same rider who almost didn't make the semi final round. In his heat race, Cliff was pinched out by the wall when Don Madison took a wide line out of turn two, leaving Cliff nowhere to go. He battled back, determined to make his way imo the semis, which Cnff did. After winning his semi final he moved to the main. Clirr flew off the 10 yard line with john Lewis and Len McBride right behind. In tum three, McBride parked it and then hooked up imo the wall. The incident slowed up the chase and Cliff's Robinson Cycle jawa was off to a comfortable lead. The best race was for second between Lewis, Nelson and Lazor. The eventual finishing order was a iff, Lewis, Lazor, Nelson and john Racin. In the Scratch main, George Lazor shot out of the two spot, taking the lead into the first-corner. When they exited turn two, Lazor on theoutside, had a wheellength lead, and it appeared that he would extend it down the back chute as he did in the semi final. Wi.th traction dwindling, Nelson and Lazor stayed side-by-side after the first circuit, Meanwhile, no more than a bikelength back', Lewis and Tom Burge were pushing up.the inside, waiting for any kind of opening. Lazor, still commiued to try and make the outside work during laps two and three, couldn't find the necessary drive. Nelson, on the other hand, •• was doing a good job of using up the race track by widening his line lapby-lap. When the pack came out of turn four for the final rotation, Nelson had his Godden in the lead when it counted as he crossed the line just ahead of Lazor, Lewis and Burge. Results DIV ONE: 1. CHARLES, MO, JULY 12 Professional short track returned to the St. Charles Speedway after many a years absence with a $3500 Busch/Skoal-sponsored, Bob Weme-promoted race. Threatening weather somewhat hurt the spectator turnout and forced a speeded up program, but the action appeared to be over before 9:30 p.m. when ScOlt Pearson wheeled his Harley-Davidson across the finish line in first only to be protested for an oversized engine. Ram had begun to fall almost immediately after the checkered flag and Pearson refused to tear down his Ron Wood-built mount adamantly denying any infractions. The issue was still unsettled at 10:30. Pearson started the evening by setting fast time over Kris Armenuout and Winkie Freitas. Pro-Am heats fell to Washington's Donald Paul while Illinoisan Byron Ward took the second. The four junior/Expert heat races were won by Pearson, Scott Adams, Freitas and Chad Felicio, three Californians with Adams from Oklahoma. Steve Steele led the first semi for three laps, but an engine problem would eventualIy eliminate him. Dave Hebb took over, but was replaced by Felicio. Herb held on for second over Aaron Hill and Freitas. Pearson took semi two I~ading all the way over Adams, Rick Weir, Kris Armentrout and Don Howard. Donald Paul used a good holeshot to leave the rest of the Pro-Ams behind in tht: final taking his Hi~h Lint: Honda-Suzuki of St:attle/Dadsponsored Honda to an easy win. Michigan's Todd Martin and Ohio's jon Enyart led Californian Steve Rasmussen home. As lightning flashed in the sky the junior/Expert final left the line behind Pearson, who led all the way. The race for second was up for grabs with Felicio, Hebb, Hill and Adams all taking a shot. After Pearson had wheelied across the finish line, Felicio led a close pack of Adams, Hill, Hebb and Freitas home. Results PRO-AM FINAL:l Donald Paul (Hon); 2. Todd Martin (C-A); 3. Jon Enyart (Yam). Harth hauls at Roebling Road RR By Larry Lawrence FAULKVILLE, GA, JULY 20 Suzuki GSXR750-ffiounted Mike Harth won both the A and B Production classes in WERA action at Roebling Road Raceway, both races being rounds of the Suzuki GSXR Cup series. Harth won $1000 for his efforts in the B Production class, but was not eligible for the Suzuki money in the A Production class since only GSXRlloos are eUgible to win money in that class. Chip Terrell rode his Tsubaki/ RSC/Shoei/SuperTrapp-sponsored Honda VF500 Interceptor to victory in the 500 Interceptor Championship series. Terrell passed early leader Greg Tysor, then cruised in for the win. The key to running strong at Roebling on this weekend was to keep cool. That proved to be quite a task as the southeast was in the grips of one of the worst drought and heatwave on record. Temperatures reached 1050 on both Saturday and Sunday. Ron Ewerth was first into turn one for the B Production race; followed by Thomas Stevens and jamie james. As the tightly knit pack made their way around the high speed sweepers of Roebling, Ewerth maintained a slim lead over quickly advancing Tysor and Harth. Stevens flew through tum one and got ahead of Tysor; Tysor took the inside line into tum two; just as Tysor's front wheel lUcked under Stevens' rear wheel, Stevens suddenly came in on Tysor, making contact, and Tysor went down hard. Donnie Rowe got on his Suzuki's binders hard, narrowly missing Tysor's head with his from wheel. Dust was everywhere and the rest of the pack dove blindly into turn two, with all but Tysor and Rowe making it. Rowe, after coming to a complete stop in the field 60 feet orr the track, got back into the race dead last, and past the start/finish line for lap three Harth opened up a gap over Stephens and james. Ewerth had dropped back to seventh after hitting his Suzuki's case guards in turn five and nearly losing it. Harth continued to hold a steady IO-bikelength lead over the restof the field as Ewerth and Rowe stormed back and finished second and third, respectively. Harth also went on to win the A Production race on his 750 Suzukisponsored by DMR Racing/Cycle PerformancelTsubaki/Shoei/Continental Cycles and tuned by Chris Birkkley, over the GSXRllOOs of Doug Chancey and ScOlt Cantrell. Chancey won $500 and Cantrell $250 [or their finishes in that race. In other action Chip Terrell pulled an upset win over Greg Tysor in the 500 Interceptor series race. Tysor had been almost unbeatable on his Interceptor in WERA's southeast region, but Terrell managed to pass Tysor on lap two and went on to win by a comfortable margin. Ewerth finished third in that contest. Dean Swims rode his rocketship GSXRlooOSuperbike to wins in Formula One and A Superbike. In the process of winning the Formula One race Swims set an unofficial motorcycle lap record for Roebling of I: 17.7. Sim's Tom Sheppard/Cycle Pro Racing/Metzeler / Auto-Litre/Kerker / Shoei/Pancake Cycle/DID Chain/ Wagoner Cycle Works-sponsored GSXR II 00 was clearly the fastest machine at the track.
