Billy Carlson cranks his Honda through a Canyon MX turn Arizona; Carlson finished third in the 125cc Expert clasa. Blythe beats Kadlec at Boot Hill Enduro By Chuck and Bonnie McDonald DEL NORTE, CO, JULY 13 Lightning bolts and rolls of thunder ushered John Blythe and his 250cc Honda into the infamous Boot Hill limelight slipping by Colorado's number one enduro rider Friu Kadlec with a onepoint lead. The win is even more amazing considering Blythe's odometer died at the beginning of the race. His timing was gauged by fellow riders and a lot of luck. Even 30 miles with a flat tire was used to advantage bouncing him over small water falls and checking his speed down the notorious Colorado Boulevard rock slide. Close behind, Kadlec and Larry Roeselerdueled for second place with the altitude taking its toll on Roeseler. This opened the door to John Bruckbauer to take third. Malcolm Smith held his own in the Senior A class clipping the competition by 32 points. Parker tops Pros atCanyonMX By Michael Ross CHANDLER, AZ, JULY 19 Dennis Parker topped the 125cc Expert class Saturday night at Firebird Raceway during round seven of the Summer Sizzler series. The Sunnyslope Honda rider came from behind in both motos and survived three crashes LO take the overall win with a 2-1 lally. Johnnie Deremo led the first Pro moLO off the line, but Tom Will quickly took the lead from Deremo. Parker was past Deremo by lap one and set his sights on Witl. Will wem wide and Parker dove for the inside line but couldn't hold it and crashed; loosing three places. Parker remounted and tried Will again on lap five. Will shutthe door a lillie too hard on Parker and they both crashed. Dennis Hilgendorf and Billy Carlson wem past the downed rider to take over first and second. Carlon aw his chance and moved around Hilgendorf on Lap nine of the I J-lap race. Meanwhile, Parker was pouring iton and passed Hilgendorf on lhe last lap for second. Carlson hoLeshot moLO two with Will, Hilgendorf and Parker in tow. Parker blew past Hilgendorf on the next Lap and took second from Will on lap four. Carlson looked over his shoulder and saw Parker all over hi rear fender. Parker tried to stuff it past Carlson, but wem down and lost two positions. Parker was up quickly and by Hilgendorf, but Will wouldn't let Parker by. They battled for two laps until Will crashed out of comention. Parker closed in on Carlson and challenged him at every comer. Devid Nicols. , Over 400 entered and due to dusty conditions the whoops and part of the back-road section had to be eliminated. No one compJained a the MX track with Larry's Launcher (a drop-off with a jump at the LOp) and the off-road car course with Animal Leap (a three-tier, six-story high dropoff) provided the racer with ample exci temenl. District 37's Dan Smith got the holeshot and lead on his 500cc Husqvarna and was tbe first rider off Animal Leap. Easing over the drop0([ and gassing it downhill for the ski-jump type second tier, mith easily cleared 45 feet and almost the third tier itself. At the ba e was a lefthand turn leading imo the coring tower. Close behind Smith were Mike "Lucky" Baker, Lee, Dan A hcraft and Chris Lance, riding a DMCprepped KX250. On lap three Baker's Yamaha quit handing the LOp spots to Suzuki's Paul Krause and Chris Taylor. Dan Smith was easily pulling away from the Open Pros when his bike developed problems and he was forced to retire, giving Lee the lead. On lap four, Lance wem down while Leading the 250cc Pro class, but was quickly up and within a lap took the lead again. Lance surprised everyone when he crossed the finish line second overall, despite having no from brake. Third overall and second Open class competiLOr wa Ashcraft while the first desert 250 and second overall 250 was Krause. Grand Prix racerss took two first place finishes and two thirds while D-37's desert racers had to seule for two seconds on the day. In the Vets class, with a turnout of 84 riders, Dave Miller lead the 250cc Expert class LO the point where he had lapped everybody except second place. Open Vet ExpertJim Hawkins LOok the lead from Jeff Larson on the third lap and never looked back as Jim Robinson followed Larson to round out the LOp three spots. Results OPEN PRO: 1. Rick lee; 2.
