Fox doubles at Metrolina MX By Gary Crider CHARLOTTE, NC, JUNE 21-22 Florida's Keith Fox survived a weekend-long war to claim Regional titles in 125 and 250cc A racing at the AMA Amateur Southeastern MX Regional Championship at Metrolina MX. The event was a qualifier for the fifth annual AMA Amateur and Youth National MX Championship lO be held August 13-L6 at Loretta Lynn's Dude Ranch in central Tennessee. The top six finishers in each class earned guaranteed starting positions at the National. Three molOS were run and a rider's best two finishes determined his overall position. Fox was challenged each time out by South Carolina's Robbie Taylor. Their battle in the 125cc A division went down to the wire. After two molOS Fox and Taylor each had a malO win. At the start of mota three, Taylor got past traffic in turn one by u ing the inside line and, at tum three, Taylor took command of the lead while Fox moved into fifth position. Halfway through the30-minme mota, however, Fox caught up with Taylor to begin a winner-take-all battle for the lead. After three laps of wheel-towheel racing, Fox went by to win the malO and the title. Taylor netted runner-up honors over Mike Parker. Fox and Taylor returned in 250cc A action, finishing first and second overall, respectively. Third-malO winner Timmy Barnes edged Scott McCLain for third overall. Iron Horse/S& prockets-backed McClain also rode the Open A class. carding 1-4 in the first two rounds. McClain confidently predicted a win in molO three. McClain was third at the sIan and needed only two laps to go by fronl runners Robby Neeley and Rick Lindell. McClain held on for the win to net the litleover Lindell. Neelev was slowed by f1al tires in the first 1'~0 molOS bUI survived lO claim sixth overall. The opening 125c B Stock malO ended in disaster for top contender Bobby Mann when he suffered a broken collarbone in a crash. Danny Payne went on to take the title, his 3-2-1 edging Jason Assad's 2-1-5 in a tied score. Sean Dukes posted 1-3-3 lO claim third overall. By Toni Anthoni WARRIOR, AL, JUNE 29 Kawasaki-mounted Wallace Fincher and Jimmy Sims showed their talents as they battled in the 125cc A class on the well-prepared, stadium-style motocross in Warior, Alabama. In the first mota Jimmy Sims pulled the holeshot with Fincher close behind. The battle for the lead continued throughout the mota as the two pulled away from the rest of the pack. Fincher seemed to pull close only to have Sims shut the door and hold on for the wi.n. The second malO was a copy of the first only thi time Fincher had the lead with Sims on the gas not more than two [eet bhind. The two put on a terrific show as they battled the entire mota. This time Fincher slammed the door on Sims at every corner and held on for lhe win. In I 25cc B action Honda-mounted Derek Monk and Pete Works split malO wins, the first going to Monk and the second to Works, who claimed the overall with a 2-1 score.
