Lane tops
Aspen RR
By Christopher Rife
ASPEN,
co, JUNE 22
Dieter Lane surprised MRA
regulars last week at Aspen's
Woody Creek Raceway by winning the first two races of his
career. Lane, in his second year-with
the MRA, graduated from the Novice
ranks only last season, but his inexperience didn't stop him from winning both the 450 and 600ccSuperbike
classes.
Dan Turner 'initially led the everpopular 4S0cc Superbike race on the
ubiquitous RZ3S0. Turner's speed
and consistency netred him the number three plate for the MRA last season,
buthe was surprised by Lane, also RZmounted, midway through the 10lap race. Unable to catch the Eleeter
Lane., Turner was left behind to fend
off defending MRA champion john
Hopperstad.
Lane pulled off a second place
finish in the second heat of the 600cc
Superbike race behind Geoff Cesmal.
Cesmat got the holeshot in the final
of this race, but Lane and Hopperstad
slipped past within three laps. Cesmat
crashed himselE out of contention
and was replaced by Turner and the
FZ600-mounted Kurt Dimick. They
finished in that order: Lane, Hopper.stad, Turner, and Dimick.
Dimick provided fits for Lane in
the 600cc Production race. Stormin'
Norman Meyer took the holes hot on
his 500 Interceptor only to be overtaken by john Hjelm on an RZ3S0.
Hjelm was in turn picked oEE by
Dimick and, further back, Lane. Lane
was closing in when the ambulance
appeared on the track in the closing
laps of the race. Waving flags prevented passing, yet allowed Lane to
catch up to Dimick. The race was
decided in a SO-yard charge from the
hairpin turn nine to the finish with
Dimick holding the edge by the narrowest of margins.
The tight I.I-mile Aspen track provided interesting racing in the 7S0cc
and Open Production races, 'currently
dominated by the GSX-R Suzukis.·
Ricky Orlando, seemingly out of a
year-long slump, rode precise races
in both classes, yielding a new 1:02.75
lap record and two first place finishes, riding on Avon tires to beat
Doug Polen twice.
.
Orlando also took the Formula
One class on his GSXR followed by
Chuck Lee, also on a GSXR. Lane
rounded out the top three in F-l
Doug Polen in 750 Production and
Skeeter jacobsen in Open Production.

Powells do it at

FREMONT, CA, JUNE 27
Three sets of brothers showed
up and all rode in the already
popular 125cc Beginner class,
but it was the Powells, Jamie
and Mike, who fared the best. In the
first mota for the 12Scc Beginner
class it was Jamie Powell who got the
holeshot followed by younger brother
Mike. Midway through the moto
Jamie fell, but quickly remounted
and .only lost two places. By the
checkers he was up into a challenging
second behind his brother, who haa
inherited his lead.
The second moto was another drag
race to the first corner hotly contested
by Mike and Jamie Powell again.
This time Mike held it on a little
longer and came out of the corner
still in the lead. It seemed that Jamie
tried everything to get by' brother
Mike, but just could not do it. Best
non-Powell finish was the pair of
third places garnered by Keith Tanti.
Mark Todd bested all the other brothers by having a 5-4 evening to gain a
fourth place trophy overal!.
In other class action Duane Hughes
again was the fastest of the Veteran
Masters. Hughes was lucky that the
second moto finish of four-stroke
advocate Phil Douglas was so poor.
He killed the engine going for the
lead and dropped back to ninth overall
before powering up to fourth at the
finish. Hughes' rapid starts and
breakaway dashes to the front were
what worked in the first moto, but
the second moto saw Hughes get an
uncommonly poor start. The lead
was grabbed by Mark johnson and
second was eventua]] y picked ,off by
the four-stroke Honda of Douglas.
johnson won the moto; Hughes took
the overall and Douglas won a deservmg second overal!.
