Kawasaki-mounted Ron Drake came away with a third place start in moto one, but by lap three he had taken the lead. Drake rode well and opened an impressive lead while Dougherty piloted his KTM through traffic, in pursuit. Time ran out as Drake took the checkers with Dougherty following. By midrace the gap between first and second was closing and soon Dougherty moved by his rival. The Kawasaki rider was not about to let the lead go and he stuck to Dougherty's rear fender. Two turns from the finish, Drake tried to pass but Dougherty shut the door and held on for the win with Frank Calandra following Burts across the line in fourth. Matt Drake ruled the 250cc Amateur class in molO one as he took the holeshOl and rode a perfect moto. Honda rider Randy Gardner moved up to second and began to feel pressure from Terry Kuhn. On the third lap Kuhn moved by with Suzuki pilot Bernie Kohler taking up the battle with Gardner. Kuhn pulle.d away but Drake's lead was unbeatable. Kohler passed Gardner on the last lap after a long dice. Second time out for the 250cc Amateurs saw Kohler, Kuhn, and Drake at the head of the pack. After a lap two shake-up, Drake had the point with Jay Resch leading Ian O'Connor, Kuhn, and Kohler. Kuhn began to fly and leaped past O'Connor for third. On lap five Resch had trouble and Kuhn moved by to look for Drake but he was long gone.
