Edge ANCHORAGE, AK, JUNE 29 Kelly Butler and his Anchorage Cycle Sales/J&R Rentals Yamaha sailed to the Alaska Motorcycle Racing Association's Pro class motocross win. After an injury-plaque season Butler finally regained the form he's showed in past seasons. The 18-year-old overcame two broken wrists and a tweaked ankle to also capture second overall in the large 125cc Expert class. MOIO one saw Butler lead the Pro class from the drop of the ga te to the checkered flag. Anchorage Cycle Sales teammate Ralph Blanchard, also Yamaha mounted, followed in second but it only lasted half a lap. Pennisula Honda's Kevin Schaub passed and took off after Butler, but couldn't catch the healed up pilot. Schaub wasn't riding up to form though after a bad crash in practice. After a few bruises and new handlebars he was oUI giving it his all. But by lap seven Suzuki Motorcycle Be Marine-sponsored Joe Good had worked his way up from a bad start 10 take second away from SChaub. The molO ended with Good in second followed by Schaub then Blanchard. Butler shot into the second Pro molO with Blanchard right behind. The two went at it handlebar-lOhandlebar until lap two when Blanchard got by. Butler kept Lrying and two laps later regained the lead. Meanwhile, Schaub was fighting his way up from midpack and Good was sidelined after a had start and crash. Eventually Schaub worked into the third spot, but the lead duo were far ahead. Blanchard and Butler diced their way to the finish with Butler taking the win by half a bikelength. Butler looked so good in practice that everyone knew he'd be the easy winner in the 125cc Expert class. But no one knew that visiting Bruce Williams of New Mexico, had other plans. Williams on a self-sponsored Kawasaki started the 125cc Expert first moto in fifth and took it easy, getting used to the sandy Kincaid Park course. Meanwhile, Butler was chasing Good around. The checkered flag fell with Good holding off Butler and Williams followed behind for third. The second moto holeshot belonged to Kawasaki of Anchorage's Kelly Styles. This is Styles' first year as an Expert and he's steadily improving. With a first moto fourth the 16-yearold wanted his first win of the year. Styles held off the more experienced Good and Butler and pulled away by lap five. However, on lap six Williams was by everyone else and on Styles' rear fender. The best race of the day followed with Williams finally getting by Styles after a slight bobble in a corner. On the last lap, Butler was also able to get by for second and second overall. Williams took the overall with his 3-1 while Styles was a very respectable 4-3 al1d fourth overall. Good could only manage a fifth and ~ad 10 settle for third overall. Results 50 NOV: 1. Heberling wins Trail-Way ST By Len Breech HANOVER, PA, JU E 28-29 Led by Joe Heberling's two close wins in the Senior and 500cc Amateur finals, several of the Amateur and a few of the Expert finals had blanket finishes, as Trail- Way Speedway hosted the second of its four summer doubleheader short Lrack events. Heberling edged Joe Gately by a length in the Senior final, while other close amalUer winners wree Kevin Varnes over Mike Sponsellr in the 80s, Dave Lesnick by inches over Ben Machamer in the 250s. Mike Varnes edged Georgie Price by a length to take the l25cc Expert final. While the Senior class does have an occasional Expert in the over 30 ranks, most riders are Amateurs. One of those Experts is Joe Gately, who trailed Heberling, as they exited the second turn. Steve Smith Lrailed in a lonely, but secure, third spot. Gately took first at the beginning of the third lap. They remained close, with Heberling retaking the lead at the halfway point. At the flag Heberling won by less than a length. In the 500cc Amateur final, Heberling took the lead from John WinSell and Jim Chapman at the end of the first lap and kept the same order throughout. Riders out of Zechman's Cycle Center had a good evening with Heberling's lWowins, Dale Gingrich's 250cc Expert win and losing the 250cc Amateur final by inches. Zechman's rider, Ben Machamer, led Dave Lesnick and Mike Klopp at the completion of the first lap. Lesnick lOok the lead after the third lap, wi th Machamer remaining very close. Machamer regained the lead as they entered the third turn on the seventh lap, but chose the wrong line around a lapped ride as they left the fourth turn for the flag, with Lesnick taking the win by inches.
