with a l:10.75 for a new lap record. Sch wamz took back the lead, and just when it appeared Schwantz was starting to pull away, he lost the front end and crashed in turn eight on lap 17. He got up, pushed-started the Honda and rode around for one lap before pulling imo the pits, nursing his often-broken left collarbone. "I started thinking of the alteInatives," Schwantz said later. Greene was now 10.6 seconds clear of Stephens and had the race and the championship in the bag. The order stayed the same with the exception of Coe putting in a great last lap to nip Long at the finish for fifth place. Greene took a 21-second win over Stephens with Oliver, Brauneck, Coe, Long and Chung following. Greene did a 1985 Randy Mamola impression as he wheelied through the corkscrew and ran 0(( the track on the cool-down lap. "He (Schwantz) lost the front end in fron t of me and I tried not to look," Greene said. "He just went in as usual and we were going the same speed so I don't know what happened." "I rode hard and it went well," Stephens said of his second-place finish. - Oliver wasn't displeased with his third, but it was a letdown after his Pocono perfoImaDCe. "I put a lot of pressure on myself," he said. Schwantz didn't have an answer for his crash either, "I was just going through like normal, but it had slid there about five laps earlier." • Results FORMULA TWO: 1. Don Greene (Han); 2. AMA Battle of The Twins: Round 7 Lucchinelli tops Laguna BoYT battle By Farren Williams MONTEREY, CA, JULY 13 Former WorId Champion Marco Lucchinelli, riding for the first time ever at Laguna Seca Raceway, powered his Team Leoni Ducati to an impressive win in AMA Battle of The Twins competition. Lucchinelli followed current BoTT Grand Prix Points leader Gene Church 0(( the starting grid, used the first few laps of the 21-lap race to reel in Church, then passed Church midway through lap six coming out of Laguna's downhill left-right "corkscrew" (turns six and.six-A). The Italian's going-away victory was assured when the hard-charging Church crashed his Harley Owner's Group/ H-D Motor Company/Duolop HarleyDavidson in the corkscrew on lap 1I. Ducati-mountedJohn Williams of California finished a half-lap behind Lucchinelli to take second, Dale Quarterley of Massachusetts outlasted California's Danny Coe for third, and New York's Jimmy Adamo nabbed jifth on his Team -Leoni BoTT winner Marco Lucchinelli passes the ~rashed Harley of early race leader Gene Church. Ducati, riding with a broken right wrist suffered in a turn nine practice cra h Friday. . Fred Eiker was the first rider to cross the finish line in the Heavyweight Modified class, powering his Moto-Guzzi home in front of Ducatimounted Douglas Gross, and third place finisher Ward Rodgers, who was riding a BMW. In Lightweight Modified action, held Saturday after the AMA Superbike race, Yamahamounted Dean J oas topped Lee Steinmetz (Norton) and Paul Gallivan (Triumph). "He make very good race, but he crash," Lucchinelli said of Church. "It was not so easy. After he crashed, yes, it was easy, but at the start it was very hard. At the start of the race h~ was very fast. I am a little bit better, I think, and he has a little more engine." It was a bitter disappointment fOJ" - Church when his front end washed out in the corkscrew. "This one I really want to win," he had said before the race. "Marco's going to be a factor; he's going good, that's for sure. If I can stay ahead of him I'll have to win. Just one more win and I'll be happy." Adamo led Church and Lucchinelli off the line, but by the end of lap one Church held a slim lead over Lucchinelli while Quanerl.ey and Williams had moved into third and fourth, respectively, dropping Adamo to fifth. Lucchinelli turned two laps in the mid-I: lOs and several laps in the 1:lls during the early going, slowly gaining ground on Church, who was running in the l:lls and 1:12s; Lucchinelli's fastest lap was a 1:10.58, which he described as, "very, very fast for a twin." It was clear sailing for Lucchinel.li after Church went down in turn-six. Williams, ridinKDale Newton's 750cc Ducati, was all alone in second, wfiife Quanerley and Coe settled into a race-long battle for third place; Quarterley, riding the Eagle Racing 750cc Ducati-powered Bimota, got around Coe, who rode Kevin Bracken's Ducati 900, for good on lap 13, but felt pressure from the Ducati pilot all the way home. Adamo motored around the track, unchallenged in fifth. The battle in the Heavyweight Modified division was between E-iker and Rodgers, until late in the race ·when Gross sandwiched himself between the front-running duo to set . the top three positions. Rodgers led several laps in the late going, incl uding the white flag lap, but Eiker and Church leads Lucchinelli in the early stages of the race; Lucchinelli caught and passed Church before the Harley rider crashed. Gross bested him on the final goaround. In Saturday's l2-1ap lightweight event, Ducati-mounted Eric Ginn of Washington led the entire race and took the checkers ahead of Joas, but was disqualified after the event for alleged rough riding. Thedisqualification gave Joas and his Yamaha the win. • Results GRAND PRIX: 1. Marco Lucchinelli (Duc); 2. John William. (Duc); 3. Dale Quanertey (Bim); 4. Daniel Cae (Duc); 5. James Adamo (Duc); 6.
