Johnson, PerreauH double Hollister FT . By Mike Vancil HOLLISTER, CA, MAY 25 A solid turn-out of riders a'nd fans showed up for the R&D Enterprises-promoted, AMAsanctioned, Stroh's Beer and Pepsi Cola-sponsored flat track program. The event capped a five week stint at the Bolado Park Rodeo Grounds facility, but had nothing to do with the Hi-Point series concluded on May 18. This was a full-on MidState Championship and none did beller than Cory Perreault and Bruce Johnson. A heat race qualified riders in some of the lesser classes, but the more . popular classes had to have semifinals for the non-direct transfers. In addition to the title of Mid-State Champion the entrants were vying for beautiful five foot plus championship trophies, championship jackets and contingency prizes put up by Advantage ATV. . Hottest of the Amateurs was young Perreault, who raced to dual championships in the 250cc and 500cc classes and did so with runaway heat and final dashes. Pereault changed over to fiat track racing from the motocross ranks and has.stated on more than one occasion that he likes the flat track scene because of the higher speeds and the low i\1cidence of injury producing crashes. The victories came to Perrault after rapid starts on first his 250cc RM Suzuki and then later on the 500cc KTM. Both machines are nOl quite fully convened from motocross trim to flat track equipment. . The dual victory performance of Perreault were duplicated by seasoned Expert flat tracker Bruce Johnson and his beautifullY"Tunning YamahaTT. In the 500cc Expert class, fast starter, Dean Vincelet dove into the corner first, however, a multi-rider crash brought out the red flag for a restart. Visibly shaken on the line after the spill was Thomas Carriger, one of the serious contenders for the championship. On the restart Carriger pulled the holeshot, but was able to hold the lead for only three lap before his machine quit running. Taking over the lead was crowd favorite Andy Tresser on a Yamaha out of Redwood City. In two laps Kun Chandler, another of the hot Salinas shon track stars, reeled Tresser in, but fell 0(( and was out of the event. Working through the pack and around all the fallen riders was Johnson. He had gOllen a horrible, midpack start. On the white flag lap, Johnson got around Tresser exiting the right hand infield turn. Johnson was followed by Tresser, and third was solidly in the possession of Robert Miller on his motocross CR Honda while Frankie Garcia powered his fiat track Honda out of Gonzales to fourth place. The final event of the evening was the Pro!Am-Expert Championship. This seemed to follow the pattern set by the Expen championship final in that Tresser was an early favorite to win and did lead for many laps. Late in the event Johnson again began his move to pick off the front running three riders and won the event going away. Also gelling by Tresser near the end of the race was Roben Miller, another of the rising Salinas flat track SLaTS. Results PEE WEE: 1. Ely Huena (Vam): 2. Casey Varrow (Yam). 60 IVINI: 1. Lewis edged Hesperia, California's Ty Davis after some very intense dicing in the 125cc A Pro division and triumphed over Jeff Matiasevich in the tough l25cc Pro-Am races. Lewis, the "California Cooker," got things staned off right (with a holeshot) in race number two - the 125cc A Pro class, but Ty Davis flashed right past for the lead. He and Lewis then ran off and hid from the rest of the pack. On lap seven, Davis turned up the heat just one more notch and swept to the win - ahead of Lewis. Canyon Country's Mike Kiedrowski finished a strong third. By the 'time the second half had rolled around, Lewis was ready and he blasted to the holeshot and led the race from stan-to-finish. Utah's Brad Frampton, Mike Kiedrowski, and Davis had to fight over second place. Kiedrowski eventually prevailed over Davis and Frampton.
